I was fishing around the Yamaha site ( www.yamaha-motor.com ) when I came across this new "Phazer" snowmobile. While I'm not real interested in sleds, the engine they came up for this one is really cool.

Here is what the site says:

"Genesis 80FI™

The Phazer GT uses a new 2-cylinder 500cc engine for its performance. The engine package is based on the YZ250F™ engine. It’s actually two of them engineered together to become a new snowmobile engine. The Genesis 80FI is fuel injected, with a 5-valve head and makes its peak power at over 11,000 rpm."

Yamaha names their sled engines by horsepower ......thus the 80FI. So a 500cc fourstroke twin making 80hp. Something like twice what a single YZ250F makes. Not bad....though I'm sure this is at the crank. I don't think you could dyno a sled.

Considering my beloved SV650 only makes about 69hp I would say Yamaha is on to something. Ofcourse they would have to design a real transmission into the thing. I don't think any bikers would want the automatic. Oh wait, you AE guys might. :D

Anyway, just thinking out loud.

I'd be skeptical of 80 hp, even at the crank. I doubt a YZ250F makes 40 hp at the crank - I think they're more like 32 at the rear wheel so that's more like 36 at the crank. And the YZF is in a very high state of tune.

And keep in mind that your SV is making that 70 at the rear wheel. So it's probably around 80 at the crank. Of course, it's got 150cc more displacement.

I'd like to see Yamaha do something in a high tech 500cc-650cc twin, both in dual-sport/adventure touring and light sportbike/standard versions. They may have to if the new Kawasaki twin sells well. I suspect both Yamaha and Honda are watching Suzuki's and Kawasaki's 650 twin sales VERY closely right now; they've got the FZ6 and the 599, but they're fours and are a lot more expensive to build.

I thought your figure seemed a little low so I looked it up. Both Dirtrider and Dirtbike came up with slightly over 35hp at the rear wheel for the '06 YZ250F. So 40hp at the crank for the single is not too unrealistic.

I will concede however that the YZ is in a pretty high state of tune, (amazingly reliable though) and that some HP would be lost in the transformation to a road going bike.

Still, even 70 or so rear wheel horsepower (we're just guessing here since the bike doesn't exist) for a 500cc twin is pretty sweet.

Suzuki SV650: 70 RWHP

Kawasaki Ninja 650R: 65 RWHP

BMW F800S: 80 RWHP (BMWs estimate) Haven't seen a real test.
