Hey FJR collective, I'm in the process of flushing my engine of old coolant. I'm planning on putting the old stuff back in the empty bottles. What is the "proper" way to dispose of it w/o being an environmental deviant & pouring it on the weeds in my backyard? Thanks for any answers in advance.

Heidi

It's actually not harmful to the precious environment, unless contaminated with oil or transmission fluid. Down the drain it goes. An EPA class I was mandated to attend once had a perfessor that said, and counseled that it shouldn't be widely disseminated, that regular green antifreeze was actually kinda good for all the bacteria that breakdown waste, so fear not. ;)

It is recommended to go into the sewer but not a storm drain by the house. Make sure it is a sewage treatment drain.

I concur. All the information I have seen regarding ethylene glycol (coolant) is that it is perfectly compatilbe (in fact, beneficial) to industrial waste treatment facilities and processes. Put it down the drain. If you have concerns with that call your local municipality for piece of mind. You could also just take the jugs to a garage or quickie oil change place as the ones around here will recycle it for a nominal fee or free. EG is very poisonous so you do not want to leave puddles around or pour it into a storm sewer. Anything spilled on the ground is OK as long as it can soak in and you can water it in heavily to dilute. Just keep in mind that a couple of ounces of EG can easily kill a puppy or small dog and the stuff tastes sweet so it is an attractive nuisance. EG kills by stopping kidney function so death is delayed and indicative of other causes so many cases of EG poisoning go unrecognized. Wash away all the spilled stuff and keep the drain pans protected and rinsed out afterward.

First, treat all the stray cats and dogs to a sample...

_THEN_ pour it down the drain. ;)

Hmmm, I have this cat that's been sleeping on the hood of my convertible....

Naahhh, I'm an animal lover. Cannot do any harm to the little critters. That cat IS pissing me off, though.

The goodies are locked safely in my shed right now. The only thing that might drink it is the water bugs... and good riddance to them mo' fo's!

Thank for the advice people.

 OOOOOH are the wackos at PETA going to be camped out on your doorstep!

I once told a co-worker who is a PETA wacko that I too was a member of PETA.

She got all excited until I told her what my branch of PETA stood for....P(eople) E(ating) T(tasty) A(nimals),

she about had a heart attack. :dwarf:

Yep, if you have a problem with turds mysteriously appearing and cat piss all over your stuff just leave a dish out... :assassin:
I hope you guys are kidding. Yes it is extremely toxic to animals. It results in Calcium Oxalate crystals being deposited in the kidneys. Causing acute renal failure and a most painful death.

In recent years I have treated a handful of malicious and accidental poisonings, not all successfully.

Deliberately leaving some out for an animal may just have serious implications to you own personal karma.

i guess you can return it to the store where you bought the replacement coolant. if they sell it, they should recycle what you bring back.

Actually I've been lead to believe it's a lot like getting drunk and passing out. But that aside, I was kidding but only because I have my own dogs and cats that my wife can't seem to live without. Troublesome strays tend to get shot (when my wife's not looking).

Yes, there are better, and more entertaining ways to deal with stray, homeless, animals. Some even make great entrees too. :p

Just ask them down at the local Chinese Buffet, round here they pay top dollar for healthy cats.

Oh, Mr Doc... I'm hoping these people were only kidding & wouldn't actually let an animal drink it on purpose. That's just f'ed up.

Good lord man, are you kidding??

Not the storm drain in the street, but the drain in your utility sink or down the toilet. The latter two go through the processing plant while the former (street drain) can go directly to a tributary or river w/o being processed.
