Had just finished playing a round of golf and came up to the pub for a cold beverage or two, only to hear the sad news about Steve -- and found myself in disbelief and shock. Having watched this guy with great pleasure for many years, it is no wonder so many (around the world) were so shanken by the news. His passion and excitement over creatures was real and contagious.

The Croc lived more life in his 44 years than most folks could do in 20 lifetimes -- as so many have said, live each day as its your last, and enjoy the adventure.

Thinking about his adorable family. RIP Steve. Jay

he got caught by a bit of really bad luck - we can only hope to ever achieve the level of passion he had for all animals.

My heart aches for his family and close friends and associates.

We are better people because of him and the knowledge of animals he shared with us for such a brief time.

The world has lost a good man.

My son, age 19 was in shock when I told him. Steve Irwin played a huge part in his becoming so passionately interested in natural sciences, leading him to pick entemology as his major in university. He grew up with the Crocodile Hunter as a 'must see' program.

My daughter, age 13, ran into her room and did not come out for a while. She is still in disbelief.

Steve, you will be missed.

My condolences to the Irwin family.

In case some of you have never seen a stingray barb to give you some kind of an idea---a 3' wide (rays are measured in width instead of length) which is considered a relatively young ray, is equipped with a barb/stinger measuring aprox 3" in length. The "stinger" is of a hard bony material and close to a inch in width. It is shaped a lot like a double sided sabre, serrated on both edges sort of like being barbed, so when used the stinger will stick, break off and not come back out. Of course it does have a point in order to penetrate. It is a very nasty defense mechanism. If this ray in question was as big as has been reported and if hit by such a nasty weapon, in the right place it is easy to conceive the seriousness----a definite fatal situation in this case, very unfortunate indeed!! We have a lot of them down here in the gulf of Mexico. Here is one I held a few weeks ago:

I went to the Outback Steakhouse tonight with my brother's family. He ordered the Sting Ray Steak...they didn;t have any!

I liked the guy like many. He provided quite a few hours of fun via the TV for me and seemed like a very enjoyable person that truly cared.
