I want to take off this weekend and take a ride up through CT, MA, NH, and VT and am wondering if anyone here rides those parts and can give me some road suggestions. My initial thought is to ride up through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, over to Burlington VT, ferry across Lake Champlain into NY, down through the Adirondacks and then through the Berkshires of MA but I am open for suggestions. Any "must ride" roads?

I was just going to just pack a bunch of maps and head out.

Check out www.westernmassriding.com for your trip in Mass. I wish I had the weekend off or I would meet you and show you around my playground.

Thanks fhaze, thats exactly the type of thing I was looking for. I recognized a couple of the roads from previous trips I had taken. I bookmarked the page for future reference.

Vermont RT 100 N to RT125 West to RT 116 N to RT 17 east to Waitsfield. Foliage is muted but not bad in places.

On VT/NY border below Lake Champlain RT 149, AKA Tracy Rd, Between Fort Ann and Granville. Can you say Twist and Shout?

I agree with these roads. In NH you want to ride the Kanc Highway (no map handy and I don't know the route number, but can find it if you want. I could even do a route if you'd like me to. I'll be out there Thursday and Friday myself. Did RT 100, 2 and a few others last Saturday. Colors not too bad.

Rt 100 +1

Last year we went to the Killington 'Rally'. The best ride of the entire weekend was doing Rt 100 from bottom to top. Highs, lows, sweepers & hairpins, scenic outlooks, and of course following a Volvo wagon or three for a few miles. Good scenery too.

Axe,,

Remember, This is Columbus Day weekend.

Every road will be a bit conjested with them damn leaf peepin' cagers...

Most motels are booked...

Be very extra careful, its supposed to be perfect weather and them

blue hairs will be out in force.

The cruzin leather groopies will be doing their 10 under thing also...

Thanks for all the input....I'm going to process the information tonight and come up with a gameplan but it sounds like RT-100 is a "must ride" part of the trip. I missed that the last time I was up that way. I'm not to worried about the hotels. I find that if you pick a crummy little town off the beaten path there is usually a vacancy someplace. I won't have my high maintenance pillion so it doesn't really matter to me how many stars the hotel has. I've never had a problem to date (knock on wood). I'll be leaving here (eastern Long Island) early Saturday and taking the three ferry ride to New London CT and intend on returning Monday PM.

Hi Axe, Grew up in Boston, spent summers in NH and Maine, and then grad school in CT for three years. But it has been 11 years since I lived in New England, and it sounds like you have your routes planned. So with a grain of salt, consider a +1 for the the Kangamangus Highway up in New Hampshire. And it has been more than 10 years, but I'm pretty sure it was Route 7 up through CT and Vermont that was pretty and mostly sweepers/twisty. When you have a fussy pillion, the Arlington Inn just over the Vermont Border from MA was really nice, but pricey. Old route 1 on the coast of New Hampshire and Maine isn't as nice as it used to be before more traffic and Outlet Stores, but still worth time on a longer trip.

The Kanc is RT 112 and runs from LIncoln to Conway NH

Axeman,

I'll send you a PM with my phone #, as I live in the Berkshires and (if a stupid work project cooperates) plan on being out and about with my dad heading in basically the same direction and we could possibly hook up. If not, off the top of my head, you would prob. mostly enjoy taking Rt 8 north pretty much all the way from CT to North Adams, then take Rt. 2 East (wheee!) then Rt. 112 North which will then merge with Rt. 100 somewhere near Wilmington. These are all main routes heading in the right direction and not too many straight lines compared with other routes. You could even scrape a peg in a few spots! Traffic will definately be heavier this weekend though.
