My 3rd generation iPod (yes it's old) does not like the Ram Mount/iPod mount. The vibration kicks it into a well documented scramble. I really like the idea of being able to see it and change songs, mute, etc. When it was working (slow speeds and good roads) it was nice.

I'm not against purchasing a flash drive iPod or perhaps just use my iPhone (didn't go with this option first, because I thought the wear and tear might be too much and I had my 3rd generation iPod to use).

Thanks for your thoughts,

Dave

PS. I did search, but didn't find any specific Ram Mount discussions.

My experience with the iPod on the FJR is that the iPod doesn't like the vibrations at all. I keep mine in the glove box and it still freezes on occasion (4th gen, with remote), say freezes at least 3-4 times a day on a ride. Anything that is firm mounted to the bike is going to vibrate enough that it will kill the hard drive in the iPod in short order.

YMMV but that's my experience.

I know that hard drive iPods will eventually be destroyed by the vibration. I'm wondering if mounting a Flash Drive iPod/iPhone will not have this issue.

I guess I don't want to be the "Tester" to find out. :)

I suppose I could start running my 2gig Nano to find out, but my remote doesn't work with it

On the plus side, flash drive MP3 players are cheap these days (not counting the iPods of course) I picked up a 2 gig video/picture/MP3/voice-memo/FM radio one for $30

I have used my 3G and 5G drive driven iPods a number of times, mounted was no-good. But laying in the tank bag (or map pocket) was mostly fine.

I have a 1gb nano that's flash based. I haven't hard mounted it though I suspect it would be just fine. It's small enough to sit in a pouch which is velcro'd to my right break leveler ram mount thingy.

The remote (wired) is spooled around and velcro'd to the top of the switches on the bar where it plugs into the starcomm.

Now that I have 2gb of jams on the Zumo with XM, I don't really use this anymore.

Since there are no moving parts, there wouldn't be an issue with vibration.

So let's all put our iPhones and flash drive iPods on Ram Mounts and if the vibration kills them, DaSpyda will go and and purchase all NEW ones if they get destroyed. :)

Can't believe I may be the first to actually take my iPhone and mount it to my handle bars. I guess when I do, I'll have to give some feedback.

Concur. It's whether the device has solid-state no-moving-part like Flash memory....which is vibration proof (or at least to the point that the circuits don't rattle their soldering loose). Things like Ipods use an internal hard drive that has moving parts and do fail.

I have a gen 1 Nano that has been on my bike for a few years now. No problems at all. I used to use an Ipod with a hard drive and it would lock up all the time. Flash memory works great and I just bought a ram mount for my new Ipod Touch. I'm sure it will work well.

Ipod mini, the old one, in a cell phone pocket on tank bag with zero problems. Not to change the subject, did I read right that the Touch is not a harddrive?

The Ipod Touch is NOT a hard drive. You can get them in 8, 16 and 32 GB. Not cheap, but they are great devices.

I will be buying the new model when it comes out in a couple months to mount on the bike.

It'll have GPS, and 3G internet capability - amongst other things... :)

I have a 4th gen 20 Gig iPod and a 4 Gig Nano.

The 20 Gig does not like being underseat. The Nano has not problem.

That's the way it should be - the darn thing has no moving parts.

It'll fly too ;)

I wouldn't bet on the GPS, but 3g for sure.

I've used my iphone on a tank mount, vibrated like hell. Since I'm more worried about it flying off at speed, I'll stick with the ipod in a tank bag. no skips that way.

If you're going to use an iphone/touch, I suggest jailbreaking it. there is a very nice app that allows you to control ply/pause, volume, skip/rw, with finger swipes.

What is the name and location of the app of which you speak?

Hot dog! the mini still works just fine, but when it goes south I'll have an excuse to get a touch. :dribble:

The ipod shuffle is also great on the bike, just clip it on your jacket and insert the ear phones and you have tunes on your ride and it's really easy to control.

I agree Ipod shuffle in pocket with ear buds, very easy no problems.
