You’re riding down the road on your way to a location you frequent several times a week. As you near your destination you are required to make a left turn at a heavily traveled intersection where there is a light.

As you enter the left turn lane you notice that you are the only vehicle in the lane. So you wait…………and wait…………….and wait some more as the lights around you continue to cycle to green, yellow and red, again & again & again. But your light just never changes. So what do you do?

Some states although few, have passed laws that actually help motorcyclist solve this dilemma all of us have faced, many on a regular basis. Many times this turn lane cannot be avoided. Unless you are lucky enough to live in an area where your lawmakers have thought about this, chances are most of us will wait through a cycle and then look around to see if local law enforcement is parked, waiting to see if you run the light and then ride through the red. I write this because there are several lights in my town that fail to recognize when a motorcycle is present at a traffic light.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all states would follow South Carolina and do the same?

Register your complaint with your Departement of Public Safety or Department of Transportation. These magnetic loops can be adjusted to pick up the presence of a bicycle (if the technician takes the time to properly calibrate it). Also, I've found, that I have the greatest success rate (of tripping an automatic stop light) if I ride directly over the loop (if you can see the loop), and if there are three cuts in the ground that you can see, ride over the middle one.

Contact the city, they will send out a crew to check/repair the sensor loop so you don't have to continue to run it. At least that's the way it works in the Republik of Kalifornia

Aside from always trying to center over the sensor [have never thought about trying to work thru the beaurocracy], I'll wait thru the second sequence at an absolute maximum, not the third no matter what & I don't give big stink whether there's local officer around or not! Ain't happen'n!

I try rocking the bike forward and back over the sensor, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If I wait too long I just make a right and turn around.
