On my commute home tonight, about 6 miles from home, I was passed by a Mercedes going about 120 mph.

I was in the #2 lane with a car about 50 feet behind me. Another car was in the #1 lane 50 feet ahead of me and to my left.. Out of nowhere a Sliver Mercedes E230 comes into my lane about 3 feet in front of my wheel. He must have seen me at the last minute because he hung in both lanes, sharing the #1 lane with the other car. The traffic was light so he kept his speed up while weaving between cars until he was out of my sight.

My first thought was he must have stolen that car. By the time I stopped to call it in he would be long gone so I just continued my ride toward home. Well to my surprise a silver MB E320 was two cars ahead of me at my exit. By the way he took the exit and was going 50mph in a 35 zone I figured it could be the same car. It whipped into a gas station and a skinny kid in his 20s jumped out. Right as I pulled in the lot I could tell he recognized the bike he cutoff a few minutes ago.

I was in a good mood and decided to play a little. Without getting off the bike I pulled up next to him and said "Going a little fast". He replied with "I am late for a date". I replied " You don't know if I am a cop, do you." At that point I think he **** himself and started apologizing and calling me Sir. Then he asks, "Are you a cop?" I replied " You will never know" and rode home.

I try to avoid danger from behind by being the fastest vehicle out there.

Glad you didn't get smeared.

Seems my last 3 high speed encounters have been with Mercedes. Seems like a trend is forming.

Glad you're ok Mike, and nice ploy :p

It would have been nice for you to get his plate number, call the cops tell them what went on in case the mOron does it again but hurts someone. Then they'll have proof a pattern and he'd be going to jail for a while. Would serve him some good. He'd get lots-O-lovin' in there...

Now, what the hell is some young-ass punk doing in a Mercedes? He hasn't even been alive long enough to earn the money for it. For that reason alone, I think you should've bitch-slapped him.

2 words... Kali Fornia. The cops don't give a chit unless they see it with there own eyes.

This is my strategy too, and it works when cars are going average speed and the "fast" car is going slightly faster. But it doesn't account for the cars coming out of nowhere at 120 MPH. They are what scares me most on the freeway--making a lane change after all the mirror and head checks, but not looking far enough back or three lanes over, and WHAM!

One of my other thoughts after he passed was, "When did JB Fairlaner get a Mercedes?"
That reminds me: I saw a red Fairlaner this morning on the way into work.

This is what I would have done too. If the sumbitch caused a crash in the rear before you saw him, or ahead, then you would help the cops nail him. Ever since my son was almost killed last summer in a roll-over by an ass-wipe who got a way, I am Jr. Deputy when it comes to getting license plates of dangerous cars out there.

But hey, Mike, glad you're OK. I think you handled it well, and by that I don't necessarily mean by talking to the kid, but most important by not letting it light you up to the point where you made bad riding decisions to catch or get even with the little prick.

I know the Peoples Republic of California has issues; however, I've called our local poe-lease and told them of violators and they will come out and talk to someone if they get some complaints, or you bitch enough. Once they have a little talking to that person, that goes in their report, thus documentation, history for next time. I understand they won't give a citation, but it can't hurt.

Glad he spoke with him and put the fear in him.

Hycle,

Glad you made it out of a potentially bad incident.

This is one of the reasons I keep my eyes on the rear view mirror as much as I look forward. Saved my bacon several times. Same thing happened to me on I-5 years ago and caught a glimpse of a fast mover coming up from behind me in the fast lane (I had a passenger as well) and quickly moved over to the #2 lane before he blasted by me. On top of that, it was an old car with bad shocks and was bouncing up and down constantly and probably had bad brakes as well. That was a whew moment.

Better advice was never given. Not sure if it is in the "Guerrilla riding tactics", but lots of stuff I do, and don't do, isn't in there. I do what I think will keep me from making contact with vehicles, other objects or pavement and the law comes secondary. As in the gun control mantra, I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.

Eye contact? How's that workin' for you when it's dark? Oh wait, already ranted about that. Never mind....

Why put out extra effort to avoid blind spots? I figure I'm just always in a blind spot, and ride accordingly, always striving to preserve my "Bubble of solitude". Some **** punk almost popped Hycle's bubble. Don't be the next pop victim!

I have had great help from the local police. I witnessed an attempted car theft which wasted three days of my life(he pled to the drug possesion and walked on the rest). I would show up to court to testify and each time there was a delay and then the plea bargin at the end.

I have made a citizens arrest when a group of teenagers were stealing gas. That never went to court.

I have great respect for LEOs and even finished a reserve police officers course and had a POST certificate.

I could have done things differently, but hell I was hungry and dinner was on the table. :)
