I got up early this past Saturday (before the rain really began), plugged in the electrics and rode up and picked up Powerdale near Hood River, OR. Nice drive through the apple orchards, dodging the muddy potholes on the steep gravel road down to the dam. Lots of fishermen down at the bottom trying their luck. I didn't have any trouble on the road, but maybe my FJR is a little more nimble than some of the bigger bikes that I'd heard didn't like it. The ride back to Vancouver was fine until the rain started in Corbett but I was prepared so no big deal.
Early Sunday morning I met OCfjr (Eric), SockMonkey (Marty), his neighbor Craig, and Craig's son Issac for coffee/danish in Tigard, OR then we rode together in the cold (34-36 deg) fog down I-5 through the Willamette Valley then over to Florence on the coast. More coffee then Marty, Craig, and Issac were heading to Mo's for lunch then were going to head north up the coast. Eric and I headed south in search of the Pony Creek facility near Coos Bay. We found the Water Works site and a road with a gate across it and figured we'd found the "Lower" dam so went off looking for the "Upper" dam and ended up at the Confederated Indian Tribe facility. We chatted with some locals near there and they claimed you couldn't get to the upper dam. So, back to the Water Works facility. If you go up behind the building you can get a picture (with bike in it) of the earthen dam and what looks like fish-ladders. I snapped a couple of pictures of the sign saying "No Trespassing on Pony Creek Watershed".
From there a quick trip east on Hwy 38 back to I-5, lunch in Cottage Grove, up to Springfield, then out to Walterville Pond (and more gravel). Got the picture and headed home, 499 miles for the day.
Best parts of the day: coffee and bike-talk with friends, heated-clothing, the Oregon coast, passing & cornering on the FJR.
Worst part of the day: I-5 between Eugene and Salem (only two f-ing lanes!)
Can't wait until I can get out and take some more dam pictures.
