I searched the forum for info on this before I tore into it & I didn't find anything, so hopefully this will be useful to someone:

On a recent trip I lost three of my four dash backlights, one by one, over the course of one evening. I called ahead to a Yamaha dealership where I had a tire change scheduled to see what it would take to get this fixed. They said that the backlights were LEDs and not available individually; the entire instrument cluster would have to be replaced at a cost of nearly $1000. Needless to say, I passed on that option.

When I got home I pulled out the instrument cluster the assess the situation. After laying eyes on the panel and comparing it to the parts fiche, I can see where the dealer made the assumption that the lights were not replaceable. The diagram seems to indicate that only the turn signal and neutral/oil/abs/etc lights are replaceable, and does not indicate in any way that the backlights can be replaced. The only hint is that the neutral-style bulb calls for a total of 9, and there are only 5 indicator bulbs max on ABS models.

Anyhow, it takes an act of God to get in to the dash, and I just didn't want to wait for 10 days to special order the bulbs through Yamaha. I hit the ol' Radio Shack and turned up these (Item # 272-1092):

$1.79 for two vs. almost $6 for one through Yamaha. Pulled the old bulbs out, slapped the news ones in (all four for good measure), and voila! Works like a champ. The job was done the same day, saving me $20.49 over the OEM bulbs and $996.42 over replacing the whole cluster as the dealer advised me to do.

Your dealer is confusing Gen 2 LED lights that aren't replaceable with standard filament lights that are replaceable in Gen 1 bikes.

I did a write-up with pictures here....which you now have done already.

I added those RadShack part numbers to my write-up! Great alternative!

Matt's write up is well done with pictures. If you have any project that requires you to take off the nose, I'd sugest changing these bulbs out even if not needed. 4 of them cost me about $20 bucks.

Nice write up! I felt certain the info was out there somewhere, I just wasn't coming up with the right combination of search terms. Now I feel like less of a jerk for thinking about taking pictures of the job but not actually doing it.

Been there before on this particular project (~50,000 miles) and forgot to take pics. :)

The write-up was the second time I did it (~100,000 miles) and knew it was an ***-pain...so was more ready with the camera this time.

But, isn't it nice to have the pretty lights ALL the way across the speedo and tach face again?

the dash has lights...I don't need that flashlight duct taped to the top of my helmet

learn something every day :yahoo:

This link is helpful in the removal of the front upper cowling/nose on the '03-05 FJR's:

As I have the wheels off for new skins, and pulled the forks for some fresh fork oil, figure I might as well go ahead and re-pack the steering head bearings and tackle the gauge lighting as I have a dimly lit speedo.

Good thing the forecast for my area is rain the next few days!
