Next week I plan on making the Volcano trip, but need my weekly day trip. I am considering a trip from Salem to Detroit and through various forest service roads to HWY 26 then to Mt. Hood and back roads to Salem. Here are the directions from Detroit to HWY 26. The total trip is 208 miles. I will be leaving Wednesday morning.

Starting from Breitenbush Rd

1 Head northeast on Breitenbush Rd toward NFD 4695 Rd - go 9.5 mi

2 Slight left at NFD 46 Rd - go 6.8 mi

3 Turn right to stay on NFD 46 Rd - go 11.8 mi

4 Turn right at NFD 4680 Rd - go 1.3 mi

5 Continue on NFD 140 Rd - go 2.7 mi

6 Turn right at NFD 4230 Rd - go 0.1 mi

7 Continue on NFD 200 Rd - go 3.5 mi

8 Turn right at NFD 42 Rd - go 10.4 mi

9 Turn right to stay on NFD 42 Rd - go 2.8 mi

10 Continue straight onto S-42 Rd - go 2.3 mi

11 Continue on NFD 42 Rd - go 2.9 mi

Arriving at NFD 42 Rd (HWY 26)

Total: 54.0 mi - about 1 hour 59 mins

Has anybody made this trip and is the route paved? There is a more northerly route using NFD 56, but I would prefer this route. Thanks ahead of time for any replies.

came from detroit to clackamas,on sept 11,2009

rode paving was still going on ,on the down side close to the timothy lake road, but was in great shape,no gravel.am assuming its all done now

Rode the route today and anwered my own question. The turnoff from the 224 is about thirty miles from Detroit. It is completely paved, but the first 10 miles is one lane (About 10 feet wide) with narrow turnouts and then widens to two lanes. It was a great ride, but in the one lane area I worried about a big Cage running me over coming around one of the many tight curves. Luckily I got through that area without any traffic. It is 26 miles from Hwy 224 to Hwy 26 and you are 12 miles from Government camp.

I planned on taking pictures, but the batteries in my camera were dead.
