While I'm waiting for D&H to get confirmation, or not, from Yamaha on their latest order I have been checking on other fly and buys.

On cycletrader these are the dealers with the best prices for an '08 A:

Smith Brothers, Oneonta AL

?, Westfield, IN

I-75, Richmond, KY

Honda East, Maumee, OH

I need to call each direct but all are very close to the price at D&H.

All are 600-700 miles from my home. All are about 30-35 miles from major airports: Birmingham, Indianapolis, Lexington and Toledo.

Any recent feedback would be appreciated. I did the search on dealer feedback forum and got one hit for the I-75 in Richmond that was over two years old.

Thanks for the help.

Lee

I have no personal experience w/ them, but I-75 in Richmond has a good reputation.

One of the Forum Members here works in their service department.

lee,

you might want to check out max pitts yamaha, they're near indy. i emailed likely 10 or more dealerships as far as 5 hours from cincinnati, max pitts gave the best price. i spoke with aaron, he knew what he was talking about when i asked about making sure certain things were double-checked on the fjr upon delivery.

dean,

thanks for the feedback. If these don't pan out I'll widen the search.

I live ~4 miles from I75 yamaha. I buy my maintenance supplies there and have all my heavy bike maintenance done there as well. Guys in the shop are pretty cool and very helpful. With only one exception they have serviced my bike quickly and professionally.

Only concern I've had is trouble getting service on the floor when I was interested in buying stuff. Reading through the Dealer Feedback section of the "WildcatRiders" forum that seems to be a recurring theme as well. Sometimes they are just plain busy/understaffed and other times they just seem to flat out ignore you on the salesfloor. Others I have spoke to that bought from out of town though have had a good experience.

I bought mine at the Westfield Yamaha - although different mgt now.

But, I have been very impressed with the improvements to the shop and they have been excellent in the service dept.

I would have no hesitation to buy from them if the deal worked out. YRMV. Good luck

Lee... For crying out loud... Do NOT let my wife see this. If she finds out I could have bought a new FJR for a decent price right here in Ohio, she'll kick my ass for sure!

I had to avoid direct eye contact with her for days while pretending to call every Yamaha dealer in a 300 mile radius...so I could report that "they were out of stock, but could get one, and would be charging full MSRP." Criminy! If she had uncovered my ruse, she never would have let me fly to the fine state of Alabama, visit the best Yamaha dealer in the country (D&H); and ride the Cherohala Skyway, the Tail of the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway to get home. Not to mention having to spend an entire evening at the fabulous Harrah's casino in Cherokee, NC because there was nothing else to do on the reservation.

Please...oh please!

Lee,

I have purchased 3 bikes from Honda East Toledo in the past year. They are great. They do what they say, when they say and they have the best prices anywhere. Don't worry about showing up and having things change or them trying to sell you add ons. They will give you an out the door price over the phone and that is exactly the number that will be on your paperwork. I have worked with Jeff and he does a great job. They charge a $75.00 document fee and that is it. No setup or freight charges. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will be glad to answer. I couldn't be happier with their service. I drive an hour and a half to buy from them and I have probably 10 other dealers within 20 minutes of my home or work.

Good Luck

might I suggest in your case: what happens on the forum stays on the forum.

She won't hear it from me.

This is great. Seems like I'll have no problem finding the right bike, right price, dependable dealer.

This may come down to two things: 1) which has the cheapest flights to the city near the dealer; 2) which one has the best route/ride home.

I'll call D&H a little later today to see if they got confirmation from Yamaha yet.

I dropped by the Richmond store on the way to the Dragon last year on my Vstrom and met the owner, he rides an AE. Since all you are interested in is price at this point ( and do they do the assembly right ) I am not so sure that you have to go so far from home. I was able to go the the dealership in Louisville and show him the prices on cycle trader and I got the same price as advertised elsewhere. the Richmond store offers (offered) a low price and so they are one option but I bet you can get someone near you to sell you the bike for near what it would cost you to by elsewhere and the cost of an airplane ticket.

We should all have such problems! :)
yea, I guess my biggest problem was the wife....when I said I wanted to buy an FJR her response was, "well, you'll buy a new one won't you?" she's amazing.

Mikey,

I did a pretty good search here in the KC area armed with the D&H price. No one came closer than $750 and most were $900 off the D&H price. Flight, an overnight, a few meals and a nice two day ride home is more than covered by $750-900.

Update: I called D&H this afternoon. Gerald said that Yamaha had confirmed they'd fill the order for two but they couldn't say when in July it might come in. July but not sure when. This fits my schedule and I'm also looking forward to checking out D&H.
