Thank you, Sir...may I have another! :D

Trust me, I was given it all she gawt, captain. Ever been to the gap? Very, very tight!!!

And thanks to TN, who seems to be lax with road violations, points will last only a year. And the best part, they won't count where I live, so no insurance hike.

Nah, there's been lots of tickets at Deal's Gap to bikes.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant first ticket for me ever, just happened to be at the Gap. The radar must have affected my plane Engleish! :D

And what he's too em-bare-ASSED to tell you is that he got caught by A HARLEY!!! HAH!!!

So no lingering points and no insurance hike is good. How much did your award cost you?

At least it wasn't on the Skyway, that would a cost a lot more.

Please share some details that might keep the rest of us out of trouble.

Now you know why the other guy let you go first!! :D

Sorry to hear that you were selected for an award. Hope it isn't too expensive.

We have had a few posts recently warning that the TN and NC police were going to crack down on violations in the Deal's Gap area due to the number of reported accidents. Apparently they frequently send an emergency vehicle out only to find that the accident scene had already been cleared by fellow bikers. This is expensive and ties up their emercgency resources.

I have only been there once, but from what I saw the local economy is very dependent on bikers and their money so I'm surprised that they decided to hand out tickets rather than warnings. :angry2: If that becomes the norm then I expect the bikers will move on and gather in other places, like the EOM is doing this year.

Usually, if you ride the Dragon, there's sporties there tapping the top of their helmets.. which signals LEO's in the area. Also, on the Tail of the Dragon site, they publish a map that shows you the most likely location of the Leo's. There's only so many places to stop in there.

If there were very few or no sport bikes, you can bet there are LOTS of troops in the Dragon, and the sporties have gone elsewhere. Sure enough, there ARE MANY other roads in the area well worth the trouble.

Also, as has been said many times before, to avoid the crowds (including troops), ride early, ride late, ride weekdays.

I wonder how well a detector would even work in there? You are really crammed inbetween lots of rock. Also wonder what kind of radar they are using? Or are they using LIDAR in there at the side of the road?

Well, I have a Passport 8500 and a V1, When I head out to Deal's Gap in a couple weeks, I will have my V1 with me. No sense in going out unprotected.

As for protection, unless they are using LIDAR, both detectors should do ok. At least in some sections. At least enough to get some radar spray and some warning. No guarantees, of ocurse.

Over the long weekend, I rode I-40W to Hickory, up 321N to Blowing Rock, Boone, across the Parkway, down 221S into Marion, west on 74 and eventually I-40E back home. About 1,100 miles total.

NC State Troopers were all running Ka band instant on radar. Several would wait until they were almost parallel to me before zapping my Escort 8500. In most cases I made visual contact with LEO, long before the detector went off.

Very sorry to hear about your award. Don't think a detector would really have made much difference this past weekend.

:glare:

Sorry you were AWARDED for such good driving. At least now I'll know to mind my P's and Q's when I'm at the "Gap" in July. Of course, I plan on running the "Dragon" during the week.

Boone and the surrounding area, highway 321 and 421 are policed pretty heavily from time to time and when the EOM comes to town I'm sure they will be out in force.

421 is one of my favorite routes in TN on the bike but I see troopers almost every time I ride. It just pays to be cautious and vigilant.

I'm a local boy, so...

Many of Tennessee's smaller towns enforce traffic as a revinue source. They like you to pay a fine, but for small speeding offences don't want to risk your license.

Many of us riders in the area warn people by helmet-tapping.

As to avoiding crowds, I'd recommend going further north to Shady Vally. The roads are just as good, and it's far less crowded. That's near where we're having EOM this year.

Most TN highway patrol run either Ka or Laser (pretty rare), and on backroads usually have the always-on dashmount running. You can usually pick this up 1 or 2 turns ahead of they are coming the other direction, even in twisty stuff. I'm not sure what equipment the county officers are running, but probably Ka as well. That's what most of the counties up here in my area of TN run.
