We're heading back from El Lay after a Stayin' Safe class around October 25th. We plan on staying a day or two in Death Valley after an overnight in either Lone Pine or Independance on the way in. I just checked the rates at the Furnace Creek Inn and they are running $380+/night!!! Is this correct? What other places are around there that are at least in the $150/night range?

I know a lot of you SoCal types have made a number of tours there, what's the options? (I haven't been there since the '60's so it's probably changed some :p )

Edit: Any "Bates Motels" to stay away from in either Lone Pine or Independance?

I've never stayed in the park but I have stayed at the Stagecoach Casino in Beatty just outside of DV. Nothing fancy and alot cheaper than 400 bucks.

Also check out the Longstreet Casino in Amargosa Valley.

As with the Stagecoach it's not fancy but it's more that satisfactory.

Just got back from Death Valley a few days ago. (Organized outing with ST-owners.com)

Check out Panamint Springs, which is a 50s style "resort" right off highway 190 about 30 miles west of Stovepipe Wells. If you can get a room the rates are very cheap and they have a nice bar / restaurant. The food is pricey though. Not a 5-star place, but lots of character nad popular with riders.

Stovepipe Wells is also an good option but the rooms are a bit pricier, but less than Furnace Creek. They've got a nice restaurant, a store, gas station, and more though. It's probably the most cental place in Death Valley.

If you can't find a room in the park, a final option is Beatty, NV. It's about 30 miles or so east of Stovepipe Wells. The Stagecoach Inn is pretty popular.

I hope this helps.

Atomic Inn in Beatty.

Stayed there last April... great deal, simple/clean accommodations, kitchsy personality, within walking distance of the local restaurants. :)

P.S. Beatty is generally 20-30 degrees cooler than Death Valley... when temps are in the 100+ range in DV, that is, imo, a big plus! ;)

P.P.S. There is a Furnace Creek Inn (BIG BUCKS) and the Furnace Creek Ranch which is very nice, not as expensive as the Inn.
