And, way to steal a post.
You're right! And I'm VERY SORRY!!!

I got carried away and wasn't thinking.
No Problem here! "Painman" got my antennae up, and "HaulinAsh" spelled out some great route ideas! I "think" I'm going to make this one!

Aye say, post ALL thoughts! I'm reading like a sponge! :dribble:

Hey, no problem Jeff and sorry you won't be at WFO :( But enjoy your trip! It is nice to explore all possible avenues when it comes to riding Idaho and the info gleaned from your request is most valuable for all. Thanks again everyone for the tips and suggestions and anyone who wants to input or ask questions on riding this area please feel free!! The real problem here is to figure out where one can go and what to see with so little time  and.....PM. <>< ;)

Well you've heard of the Dragon's Tail on the east coast, but this Devil's Tail on the Snake River on the way to WFO makes the Dragon look like kindergarten and looks very interesting.
I've ridden Devil's Canyon (or Devil's Tail) area several times. It makes for spectacular riding, but NC 129 (Tail of the Dragon) is much tighter and requires more technical finesse. Apples and oranges, etc.

I'm just saying ID71 it doesn't compare to NC129. Given the choice, I would prefer ID71 because:

1. Less traffic.

2. Longer.

3. Easier to ride and enjoy.

4. Better scenery.

5. Suits the FJR better.

I'm jealous too, because it looks like my travels will take me east instead of west this year.

Let me get this straight, If a fella from Northwest Calif on a Blackcherry FJR were in Cambridge

on Wed night, there would be a few riders headed out Thurs morning to poke along a twisty

road north to Moscow? And would it be rude to ask to join in on the potential fun? like you guys

would'nt mind if you had tag-a-long? I would bring my own jerky, home made of course... and I'm

polite and house broken, I even make a good Stepenfetchit.... Iffen you needs a shitbilly...

FWFE

Eureka! Ca

not Eureka any where'selse

FWFE, not rude at all and not offended by black-cherry either. Thurs morning as you say I hope to be there but as I mentioned in my first post not sure about what I can do yet. But there should be more of us making this same ride plan as time nears so maybe anyone going for sure could post up.

Also as blufjr mentioned in post #2 at WFO3 he did this route from Moscow and back in time for dinner at approx. 250 mi. and 6 + hours. The advantage I see going this route is it may be better ie. you won't be packed up with a full load of gear. That may not bother some but just something to think about or consider. I'm not riding two up so may not be that big of a factor anyway. Still trying to put a schedule together for all the fun. Be safe, PM. <>< :yahoo:

For those riding through the PNW, here are some local guys web pages covering the different roads. Use these web pages to check out the roads and to get different takes on the same roads.

Mine: https://motorcyclingpnw.com/

Steve Folkstad's: https://www.pdxbiker.com/

Adrian's: https://www.roadsnw.com/

Ted Gavel and Steve Walker's: https://oregonmotorcyclist.com/index.php

Have fun looking at these. I haven't check lately to see if there are anymore. All these have been around for 2 to 5 years.

I think blufjr's memory is a bit off on the mileage/time estimates. According to Google, it is 125 miles from Moscow to Joseph, 67 miles from Joseph to Oxbow via NF39, and (my memory from last summers ride) another 25 miles to the Hells Canyon visitors center. NF39 is mostly 25-35 mph blind curves and with a side trip (6 more miles) to the Snake River overlook, you are probably looking at about 5 hours to get from Moscow to the visitors center.

I agree with MCRider007 on the time to get to the Dam from Moscow, but the original mileage of 250 was going from Cambridge to Moscow with the side trip to Hells Canyon Dam and was in regard to Painman's original post. Post #2. :p I am glad you brought this up MCRider007 as the mileage was wrong, it should have been 279, as I must have forgot to add in the side trip mileage twice, in and out. Oops.

I remember my ride there from Moscow. Two of us left Moscow at 7am. We went down into Lewiston, then back up the Spiral hwy, turned around and came back down. We rode to the Grande Ronde Rd. and then took a side trip to Troy for breakfast/GT checkpoint. Then we rode to back to Hwy 129, then Enterprise, Joseph and tuned on to Hwy 86 to Oxbow. We stopped to discuss turning around to make sure we got back for dinner at this point. I thought we could make it to the dam and back in time for dinner. As we had as many mile to go as we had just completed, so we hurried. It was around 12:30pm or just after noon and we had completed about 240 miles at that point. We made it down to the dam and back to Moscow, another 243 miles by 5:30pm. I bent my front wheel on my BMW R11 doing NF39. Hit a pot hole at 60 leaned over. Just happened too fast. By the time we got to Rattlesnake grade, going up the Washington side I was tired and slowed down a little to make sure I could ride another day. I must say tho, that we really hauled ***, and did NF-39 very fast, and all straight aways were 80+. Even with the stops to inspect the damage wheel and getting gas in Enterprise we did that 243 miles in 5 hours + a few minutes. Oh ya, it must have been 115 degrees at the dam and mostly above 85 elsewhere. Note miles have been adjusted to actual, as we thought we had done 500 miles that day.

That was a long days ride...and your memory is pretty good! :clapping:

My comment was in reaction to Painman's statement that you "did this route from Moscow and back in time for dinner at approx. 250 mi and 6+ hours" which seemed to be greatly understated in both distance and time...which you just verified was actually distance and time for one way rather than round trip.

Maybe Painman mis-read your post, maybe I mis-read his post, but anyone thinking of riding to Hells Canyon Dam from Moscow (and back) during WFO better leave early and plan on a long day's ride with some very hot weather along the Snake River.

Don't really need a shitbilly, and.... I'll probably lodge in Cambridge on Thursday night. Rudy, Eye Bob, and I plan to ride up the Snake to Oxbow on Friday morning. Then to Moscow in the PM. You are welcome to join us, if it works out for you?

Mahalo Khuna,

Thanks for the invite to scrape some pegs, but I have already

made reservations for Thursday night in Moscow, so I will

already be a day ahead of you, no Iron butt here, this old

fart is taking all week if need be to arrive and we'll just

play by ear the return trip.
