Dirt Getting In Gas Tank

I've had my '05 FJR almost a year now and have noticed this problem every time I fill the gas tank that there is all sort of dirt just under the gas "cap" that I have to be extremely careful not to let into the tank. On windy days this can be a real challenge. I have tried to block the tank off with a cloth and use air to blow the dirt away but many times by time I get back to the gas station, there is more dirt accumulated.

I always ride with the windshield all the way up and often with a tank bag. Could this be contributing to the problem? Any thoughts or suggestions? Please don't tell me that I should just wash the bike more often! :blink: Thanks.

I suspect the tank bag. I do not use a tank bag and have never noticed any dirt under or around the gas cap.

If it is caused by dirt colloecting under the tank bag then it would not be good for the paint.

I would "guess" that the dirt is coming from the venting tube. I know some people cut the tube that sticks out the bottom of the motorcycle a different way (slash cut a different direction), and I think I remember that was the reason why. Someone on this board will be able to tell you for sure.

I highly doubt with a tank bag on you are getting any dirt in from around the gas cap.

As mentioned above, the dirt is coming from the vent tube. This is a common occurrence, and the solution is to cut the vent tube at the bottom of the bike so that it is facing the rear, and not scooping up dirt as you are riding.

Tank bag and windshield have nothing to do with it.

agree with the scooter man. Used to have the same prob. untill I cut the vent tubing with high side of cut facing the rear and Poof no more dirt under gas cap

And, after clipping your overflow and vent tubes under the bike, do a little quick PM on the filler neck.
