Coming from a seaside village I get to watch the comings and goings of pleasure boats every day and it seems that a majority of outboard motors on boats these days are either Yamaha's or Honda's. So, since Harley Davidson doesn't manufacture outboards, does it kill the true blue Harley guy to fire up his brand new boat when it has a Yamaha or Honda engine on it as standard equipment? Enquiring minds want to know....

The one guy I know with a Road King runs a Volvo Penta.

I guess it makes sense if a lot of Yuppies are buying Harley's that they'd trust a Volvo on the water...

Ah, there's still Mercury and OMC (Evinrude/Johnson). Don't have to go rice if ya don't wanna.

I've been searching for a piccie of the dood back home that had a 'rat' boat with Siamesed Pan Heads, to no avail. Some peeps jones for strange ****.

My boat dealer told me to buy the yamaha outboard instead of the mercury, in the small motorts the power head on the Merc was made by yamaha anyway. And nissan makes them for johnson. Go figgure it.

Honda or Yamaha outboard??? Harley-Davidson™ boat owners don't need no stinkin' outboard! Paddles were invented thousands of years ago and they still work great! If it ain't broke don't fix it! Heck paddles are even water cooled! :p

Since I am still a HD guy I am qualified to state that we avoid water, except when drinking. But if we fly we prefer to stand by the true blue bar and shield:

Check out the company!

Actually, I would imagine the HD motor makes a pretty good aircraft engine. Undersquare, nice torque and t-curve, good config for cooling, dry sump for good oiling inverted and during severe g force manuevers.

Yes, but it's the weight of the in-flight repair kit that kills the performance!

My neighbor just returned from Sturgis. One truck, one 14' trailer, three HDs with one in the trailer going out. Trip back... two HDs in the trailer and third one that rode out in the trailer actually made it back on two wheels.

Back to my standard HD joke. 97% of all HDs ever sold are still on the road today. The other 3% actually made it home!

Loud pipes save lives!!!

jimbemotumbo,

Seriously, that configuration would help the cooling on that powerful Harley-Davidson™ motor rather than cooking the rear cylinder.

But I must ask, do they install a Screamin' Eagle kit in the motor first? Maybe the Stage 243 kit? And Screamin' Eagle pipes as well to chase off the in-flight bird collisions? Still wear gloves with no fingers when flying? Doo-rag vs the pilot's cap? And lastly, do you still need ***-less chaps with flying the Hog-Air contraption? :D

That is a great application - just part of a radial engine. And pilots love making noise as much as posers!

Awwwa.......pilots.....glorified bus drivers....that happen to cry alot....aboot how the airplane flies.

Radial aircraft engines were given up on many years ago by most engineers due to the poor aerodynamics when the whole plane was considered. Hell even H-D turns them sideways!

Actually, radial engines were given up when the jet engine came out. Reminds me of my powerplant instructor at school. Large radial engine weighing about four thousand pounds putting out about four thousand pounds of thrust. Jet engine maker comes up says his engine does the same. Radial engine maker says prove it. Jet engine maker says...well, help me lift it up and bring it to the test stand and I'll show you.

Radman nailed it. I hear these make damn fine aircraft motors. The Twin Cam is ultra reliable (unless your poser bro-in-law helped you add performance mods!), easy to maintain, and has the design features so noted by Mr. Radman.

Reminds me of the old T-Shirt I used to have in the early 80's. Had a HD logo on it and the words "If they made airplanes would you fly in one?"

And by the way - Sold my Road King about a month after buying the FJR. Then sold my Guzzi sport after a few canyon runs on the FJR. Dam Japanese bike does everything, and well. Prob need to buy a leaky old kickstart shovelhead, just to remind me how good I have it.

FJR airplane ... anyone? Sorry to hijack. Returning you now to your expected topic.
