I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing "fairly well" for my age. (I just turned 65).

A little concerned about his comment, I couldn't resist asking him, "Do you think I'll live to be 80?"

"Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine, or hard liquor?" he asked.

"Oh no," I replied. "I'm not taking any drugs, either."

Then he asked, "do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?"

"Not much," I said, "my former doctor said that red meat is very unhealthy."

"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?"

"No, I don't."

"Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have lots of sex?"

"No," I said.

He looked at me and thought for a second and said, "Then why do you even give a ****?"

True story...

My dad was in primary care, dying of Leukemia at 88. Us kids meet with his Doctor.

My brother (the eldest - university educated) asks, "What should we be doing with his diet? More vegetables, low fat? etc"

My dad's Doctor leans over to my brother, looks at him over his glasses and says,

"I sure hope when I am your dad's age and on my way out that I get to eat whatever the hell makes me happy. If he wants to live on hamburgers, french fries or ice cream? I am ALL for it!"

(then proceeded to give my brother a disgusted look like he was a total moron - well, he is...but I digress)

Barb, your story is just about the same as ours, the last couple of weeks Dad was in the hospital (where he spent almost his whole last month) he ate what he wanted to, when he wanted to. What does diabetes and blood pressure matter when you know you have just days? My sister smuggled in some oysters for him, even! It was great to see how much he enjoyed those!

carpe diem?

A very good friend's father was in the hospital, coming to terms with his own mortality. He'd alread out lived his wife by 6 years and managed to make it to 85. His doctor asked him if there was anything he wanted, and his answer was good irish whiskey, (What with a name like Moriarity). The next day the Dr. brought in a bottle of fine Irish and they set there and enjoyed a couple of stiff ones. He passed a fufilled man.
