Hi gang. Am planning my first tour on my '07 FJR, and would like to spend the night in Alpine, rather than Greer or Eagar, AZ. I know there's only one small motel there, but can't find the info. Don't personally like BBs, which is all Google spits out. Thanks.

I've stayed at Mountain Hi Lodge before. Not the greatest place in the world, but the beds are clean and they are M/C friendly. The parking lot is all dirt though, so make sure your comfortable with that.

Hannagan Meadows is suppose to be a nice place to stay in Alpine, but I've never been there. Only stopped in once waiting for a friend to catch up during a ride.

Mountain Hi Lodge

42698 US Highway 180 E, Alpine, AZ

(928) 339-4311

Hannagan Meadow Lodge

22 miles South of Alpine, 23150 U.S. Highway 191, Alpine, AZ

(928) 339-4370

Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge (N33.88390 W109.15642)

Be careful on US-191 south of Alpine, it's addictive...

Like Arte, I've also stayed at Mountain Hi Lodge and Cabins. They now have a website: https://www.mountainhilodge.com

Nice and inexpensive place to stay, and they do like motorcyclists. Hannagan Meadow Lodge and Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge are also very nice. But unless they've changed their policy from last year, they demand a two-night minimum stay; and are pricey!

The parking lot was still dirt last September when AZ Beemers and Fast Tour Riders Group stayed there. If you are going to take advantage of using their nice BBQ's to make yourself dinner: The closest place for fresh steaks, baking potatoes, salad greens, etcetera is the Safeway Store in Springerville. Little store at the intersection only has canned goods, bread and beer.

Couldn't find where the heck my post was moved. Thank you for all your help folks. Will contact all of them tomorrow and ask for prices, availability, and accomodations. I obviously prefer a paved parking lot, but since I don't plan to make the trip with any chance of rain, guess it doesn't really matter (have to clean the bike after the trip anyway). If the other 2 places still require 2 nights minimum, I'll be staying at the Mountain Hi Lodge for sure.

The purpose of the trip is to ride the twisties. This particular trip is alomst twist overload, as Gila offers a ton of them, on the way to 191. I made this trip once, but will make it backwards this time. Alpine rather than Greer, AZ should make trip about 800+ miles total, but it's A LOT of seat time due to a ton of tight twisties. Thanks again for all your help gang; really appreciate it.

While US191 (formerly US666 - aka the 'Devil's Highway') is truly a great motorcycle road................

If you can, try to ride US60 between Globe and Show Low which is my favorite road in Arizona. Great scenery, and some great twistys for part of that route.

ELP_JC: If you don't mind company riding the Devil's Highway, post me at [email protected] and I'll organize a "Meet and Greet" ride from the Valley of the Blast Furnace with the mooks above that have also posted to this topic. From May to September, we Phoenix FJR 1300 riders are looking for an excuse to get out of the Hot Box, and ride to cool Eastern AZ.

Mi muy buen amigo SkooterG es verdad, getting to the start of Devil's Highway on US 60 via Globe/Show Low is fantastico!

We only stayed one night at the Tal-Wi-Wi... but it looks like you are covered... :)

Actually, there are 2. Besides the Mountain Hi (on the E. side, hwy 180), there's the Sportsman's Lodge (on the N. side, hwy 191/180). Sportsman's #, 877-560-7626 -- the manager rides BMWs (K75S, R1100RT) and has recently had some parking-lot paving done. There is a small grocery store in Alpine and a dandy little restaurant -- The Bearwallow.

Tal-Wi-Wi and Hannagan Meadows are both neat places -- but, in my experience, a little un-reliable concerning hours of operation and meals. The only time I was able to eat at Hannagan Meadows was when they had lodgers and they were preparing meals for them -- then, the kitchen's open -- and, the meal was great. Tried to eat once at Tal-Wi-Wi but the cafe was closed.

If you're on US180 S.E. of Alpine, here's another option (right on the highway):

I'd be delighted to have your company; thanks for the offer. I'll let you know when for sure. I'm shooting for next week, but I usually ride during the week to avoid traffic, cops, etc (much safer IMO). Can you folks still make it??? I'm somewhat flexible (usually very flexible), but can't take more than 2 days right now. My biggest obstacle is the weather (nasty winds, to be specific), so have to clear that hurdle first. Will let you know for sure. Oh, but just keep in mind I wouldn't show up in Clifton until after noon; hope you too. Then you can go back home via 60, and me via 180, like last time.

Thank you for the heads up on hwy 60 from Globe to Showlow, but that'd have to be for another trip as it'd put me well over my comfort seat time for an overnighter. Keep in mind those 800 miles (round trip) are the equivalent of 1,600 on the slab. This will be my first longish trip on the feejer, by the way. I've made some changes, like a Sargent seat, throttlemeisters (hardly needed on this trip), and custom pegs, so we'll see how comfortable it is for the long haul. I'm afraid the pegs might put my feet to sleep during the trip, so will take the stockers just in case (knee pain vs tingling feet), but I don't want to lower them as cornering clearance would suffer. We'll see. Did a full TB synch, but will have to repeat it as it had well less than the recommended 1K miles. It did make a noticeable difference though, but it can still get buzzy at certain rpms (need to monitor that).

As far as where to stay, I'm fine wherever. Thanks for that 4rd recommendation. Will give it a try too. By the way, the 2-day restriction on the TalWiWi is only for holiday weekends, so all of them are an option. And just heard from TalWiWi, and said they'll open their restaurant Apr 18, so the gang knows. For now, the one in Alpine is pretty good IMO; it's the only one I noticed there. Have a great day all.

We know we're late here but we just wanted to give the Sportsmans Lodge in Alpine our "thumbs up".

Great owners (guy has an old BMW) who knew how to make us feel comfortable anyway. Not luxurious but clean and reasonably priced.

Say, is there enough interest in Alpine that we schedule a FJR Forum SW rendezvous there on Saturday, August 18, 2008?

I'd be glad to do the legwork to check on availability for that weekend with the local hotels and get discount rates for us.

We could barbeque on Saturday night or eat at the Bearwallow. We'd establish routes for we Zonies to meet up with you.

18th is three weeks after NAFO and two weeks before Labor Day Weekend. It'll be hotter than hell in Phoenix at that time.

If you are interested, please respond here or post me at [email protected] or we can talk it up at NAFO in Colorado!

I'd gladly do it again, and don't have any conflicts with the date as of now. Hey, when is the Colorado NAFO you mentioned? I couldn't do a long trip (or any trip) last year, and would like to make up for that this year. It's too damn hot for Big Bend, Texas Hill Country, or anything like that already (let alone in summer), so Colorado or Utah sounds great to me. I did a weeklong CO trip 1-1/2 yrs ago (on my BMW) and it was incredible. Take care.
