Does the AE have a high rpm cold idle?

For a cold start my FJR idles at about 2K rpm. Does an AE do this too?

I'm curious if the AE will execute a shift from neutral to 1st while the engine is idling at 2K? Or must you sit still until the idle gradually drops below 1300 rpm before you can shift into 1st?

My AE idles up to about 1500 - 1800 cold and then settles down to 900.

And you can flip the switch soon as the engine starts, cold, hot, and at any RPM below the rev limiter and it will certainly shift into gear. HOLD ON!

 
+1 About 1500 cold and was at 900 warm, I raised the warm idle up to about 1050, it makes the transition from 1st gear to gliding a little less abrupt in slow, parking lot manuvers. At 1500rpm the AE will let you shift from nuetral just fine without launching you :)

 
Mine is in line with the rest of the posts so far.

Around 1500 cold to 900 warm.

I did the mod to make my clutch engage at a lower rpm at take off.

Don't member exactly what I set it at now.

okie, how is that clutch engagement adjustment working out for you? I assume that would be the computer controlled RPM adjustment? When does your clutch engage? Mine is factory at approximately 1500, but as others have stated before, it seems a bit high.

The 2nd generation FJRs, both A and AE, don't fast idle quite as high as the first generation bikes did. My 05 was at about 2000 rpm while my 07 is at about 1500.

It works out great. It makes those "frick" I missed my turn slow U-turns and parking lot maneuvers much, much easier.

Give it a try if you like and iffn you don't like you can always set it back.

Simple answer: The AE idles fast just the same as the A. During this time, clutch engagement revs are also higher than normal, so no danger of engagement due to the fast idle.

As one bar comes onto the temperature gauge, the idle drops, as does the clutch engagement RPM.

This higher engagement RPM is one reason why I usually allow my engine to warm up before moving off, all those revs is just embarrassing when trickling out of a car park.

Same here. I'm glad the bike warms very quickly as the higher rev "feathering" while cold is annoying/embarrassing when in a hurry.

 
I have also found it better to let the bike warm up to two bars before engaging 1st gear. This seems to help keep the clutch from slipping too much. When I come to a stop I shift down to 3rd and after I have my speed under control I only use the rear brake enough to make the clutch disengage then as I'm coasting to a full stop down shift to 1st with the clutch disengaged. This makes things much smoother for me. If I'm not coming to a full stop I have found it better to only down shift to 2nd and use the rear brake as you reengage the clutch and to control your corner speed this seems to be much smoother than using 1st gear if your not coming to a full stop.
