Does the FJR have an auto shut off?

I was in the Smokes last week for a ride and had a weak battery. Woke up one morning and it wouldn't start. I jumped it off and let it sit there and idle since we were not ready to pull out right then. It idled for approx. a half hour and then just shut off. Shut off as crisp as flipping the kill switch or turning the key to off. The temp was around 47 degrees and the fan started cycling on and off but never got close to running hot. I thought the battery had just run down (alt. not charging) and it died, but it started right back up when I hit the starter... I have no idea why it just shut off?

Thanks,

No.

Sounds like you'll get to diagnose the myriad of electrical possibilities....first being to retighten the battery terminals. Or we are in the shoulder season as fall days turn crisp where batteries do funky things and the system transitions between summer and winter fuel.

Which begs the follow up question... does the FJR experience heat-related issues when left to idle for too long like Gold Wings and other bikes do?

In the three I've owned that I've let idle for long periods of time (including >100F heat) and the variety I've seen idling for a while...I've never experienced an issue....no.

^^^^^^^^ the manual says:

This model is equipped with:

* a lean angle sensor to stop the en-
gine in case of a turnover. In this
case, the multi-function display in-
dicates error code 30, but this is
not a malfunction. Turn the key to
“OFF”and then to“ON”to clear the
error code. Failing to do so will pre-
vent the engine from starting even
though the engine will crank when
pushing the start switch.

* an engine auto-stop system. The
engine stops automatically if left
idling for 20 minutes. In this case,
the multi-function display indicates
error code 70, but this is not a mal-
function. Push the start switch to
clear the error code and to restart
the engine.

Well that explains that! I've never let it idle that long. Good to know it works and I don't have any problems, other than a weak battery...

Thanks!!!

So the engineers designed in a safety to help avoid the possibility of melt down?
Prolly to either keep the cat converters from melting the saddlebags or so you can't asphixiate yourself in the closed garage......... well, in 20 minutes anyway.

This begs the question, though. Why are we idling our bikes for 20 - 30 minutes?????? I can see being jumped but not ready to ride, I guess, but it doesn't charge well at idle.

Who needs a jump in the Smokies, anyway? Point it downhill and bump it.

Evidently my Gen I doesn't have that feature because there are some intersection traffic lights in Nashua NH that are longer than that and my FJR didn't shut down ;)

I used to deploy the "manual shutoff device" (aka key switch) at any stops that go for longer than about 5 minutes on my 1st Gen with its built-in nut sack warmer. Unless it was winter, then I'd just smile.

Did the headlights turn off when it shut down?
Excellent question.
I was off to the side of the bike when it happened and didn't think to look at the head lights. I just assumed at the time that they were on since the side running lights were on so I turned off the key real fast not to waste any battery power because I knew I was going to have to try to start it again soon.

It might not work that way. I started mine on the side stand and it never left it, I didn't even blip the throttle. Just go out there and start it on the kick stand and go in and have a cup of coffee and see what she does... Check the lights for us if it happens.
