Doesn't Howie need a motor?? Might be the best deal..

I'd be all over it if it wasn't for the bazillion unanswerable questions about a Gen II > Gen I swap. Too many unknowns, dammit!!

Tis a good deal IMO. I'd pay that just to have it in the garage (well probably hanging on the wall of the garage in bits and peices after dismantling it :D ) but getting it here would have been a bee-atch.

Well I had my chance! :)

yep, Alan da Ionbeam point out that potential catch to moi yesterday

I'm looking for another low mileage '04 (or '05) ABS prefer bike since I have 100k on this grenaded one

It needs steering head bearings, brakes service, wheel bearings, and whatnot

I'm glad I'm not (really  ) in competition with my friend Steve da RadioHowie for a good replacement engine.

It would not be pretty and they'd be casualties

let's ride safe and be careful out there,

Mike in Nawlins'

geez...with all the crashing around here, you'd think that there would be plenty of Gen 1s in the auction/salvage yards.

I know my bike from my crash last fall was in great condition with 52 k miles. Illinois law wouldn't let me buy it back.

"Bringing a knife to a gunfight" comes to mind. :lol2:

But one day, SOMEONE is gonna swap in a Gen II motor in to a Gen I rolling chassis and all will be answered. I'm just not the "guinea pig" type.

Since (we assume) the major differences are on the outside of the motor, i.e., fueling, ECU, coolant hookups, the biggest question in my mind is the lack of a VSS mechanism in the Gen II tranny. That could be a deal-breaker, 'cause a Gen I ain't gonna work without it.

what about just swapping the head itself...is it a physical match & does all the earlier stuff bolted to it match OK

what's different: fuel rail and injection, cooling pipe, sensors and plugs ???

also the different clutch slave cylinder and VSS signal (OK what's a VSS signal ?)

Gen I used a VSS signal - Vehicle Speed Sensor to tell the ECU how fast the transmission is running. From that the ECU can calculate MPH and odometer mileage, plus factor these values in to any additional FI and spark timing calculations as needed. On the Gen I the VSS sensor is much like an ABS sensor. It is located at the bottom, rear of the engine and pulses every time a Middle Gear tooth goes past. There is rumored to be a blank-off plate on the Gen II engine block where this sensor goes. If true and the hole spacing is the same as a Gen I, the sensor can be retrofitted with no wiring harness issues. The Gen II uses an wheel ABS sensor to provide this information.

The Gen II slave clutch is different but is proven to be capable of reverse engineering.

There is speculation that all frame bolt holes and accessory holes in the Gen I and Gen II engine block are compatible. This remains unproven.

The stator in the Gen II has higher output so it would require that the Gen II R/R is transferred too. This will be a wire harness challenge. Perhaps not a serious challenge but it is another item to deal with.

The Gen II cooling system is externally plumbed different. It is speculated that the engine block fittings and water pump connections are the same, Gen I to Gen II, but it is unproven.

As previously mentioned, all FI and gas tank related items would be moved from the dead Gen I engine to the replacement Gen II engine. With the exception of the stator wiring, the engine harness connections between the Gen's should be fairly straight forward.

It remains unproven that the coolant connections on Gen I and Gen II engines are the same. I believe this would be the only difference in cylinder heads. Time for a P/N check...

I reserve the right to add to this list :D And be mistaken.

Maddog reports a shop in CA charged $2600 to rebuild his head from start to finish on his '04 which he sold to his brother

that sounds reasonable and less than I thought

$2600 for the engine plus fixing the other things Isabella needs like steering head bearings, I probably could raise $3k and have my bike on the road. Maybe I'll call around some more and find somebody who I believe would do a good job for about your amount of $$$ within 100 miles or so from New Orleans.

Anybody have some advice on finding a competent shop to rebuild my head from start to finish ???

I'm interested in this approach for less $$$ than purchasing another bike
