Silent and I are conspiring to drop into Golden after gaining some northwestern altitude. Glacier and Yellowstone are must-sees. And I want to see Mt. Rushmore. Oregon and Washington are possibles, but it's also possible we'll head directly from the SF Bay Area north-east toward Utah.

Next weekend we're going to start our ride planning, but in the mean time, we would welcome ideas for beautiful routes and sites. We will have to limit the number of two-lane twisties we can fit in if we are going to cover ground.

Thanks in advance,

Jb

If you're in the Mt. Rushmore area, Spearfish Canyon, south out of Spearfish to 14a (as well as 14a south from there), is one of my favorites. And if you're camping the city park (right where the canyon starts) has a nice campground. As long as you're out of there before bike week.

I would recommend you take 80 through scenic Dixon, CA.

The POI's are too many to mention, and I-80 through here is twisty and challenging.

Even in July, the weather is always cool and breezy.

The locals are friendly and inviting, and if you sit outside the Solana Baking Co. long enough, a bunch of FJR's will gather.

Have a great trip, and if I can offer any more help, please contact me. :D

Wow, now that sounds inviting. Dixon USA. The chamber of commerce I'm sure would be very proud of you.
JimmyB ...good luck and fun on your adventure. Soooo many options I wouldn't know where to start. But if you're heading to Glacier, I'd sure suggest hitting some of the prime ID/MT roads on the way there ...and if youu should do that via Nevada, please let me know, and if I can help. (did Glacier last year with kathy ..but our fondest memories are of the good stuff getting there)

I'm not sure if OldMichael is serious, but I did that very route earlier this year. From Dixon no less. i-80 to Reno, NV is rather fun, as far as superslabs go. Rivalled only by i-76 between Grand Junction and Denver, CO (of the roads I've ridden, there are countless others I'm sure).

Devil's Tower is a nice scenic drive towards the Black Hills/Mt Rushmore area... and if you're interested, you can find Nemo

Looks like a good one. Thanks!

Departure and NAFO arrival dates are needed to assist, me amigo.

BTW, you doing the NAFO SS1K?

The trip to take is through Utah. I am heading for NAFO from Minnesota…via Utah. I am going out early to Escalante and then touring out from there for a few days. I will make it through Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Grand Staircase Escalante, US 12, US 9 and US 95. Then back through Colorado via Durango, Ouray, Montrose, etc. You just need to be prepared for the heat. Wet vest has been my best friend for desert riding. The scenery is un-rivaled. You will get a touch of postcard fatigue as you wish you could take a picture a every turn.

You could take the northern route back...it should be a little cooler than the southern route.

James.......

I'm meeting Violione and Jackson up at Custer SD. Violione and I arrive there on 7/21 and plan to see the sights including Devils Tower, Badlands, Needles, Mt Rushmore, Crazyhorse, etc. and are riding down to Golden on the morning of 7/24. If by chance your in the area those dates shoot me a pm and we will exchange cell #'s :yahoo: .

This is my Route to Nafo leaving on Saturday and arriving on Thursday

The Uberkul's will be joining the Ms. and I

This thread has got me chuckling, because it seems half the country is going to NAFO via Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore. The place is gonna be lousy with FJRs!

Silent and I are leaving Saturday morning the 19th as early as I can get his lazy *** outta bed :D , and getting drunk with some FJR riders up in Portland that night. Then we head to Glacier, Yellowstone, etc., to be in Golden on Thursday.

donaldb, see PM.

dCarver, unlike you, I do not violate the Sacred Bylaws of the CBA. Hell, I don't know if I'm going on ANY rides once I get there, let alone a SS1K or L, or even M.

So JB, what's the final route look like?
Don, you rascal....

I tried to return your PM the day you sent it, but since you're obviously not a tech guy (in spite of the job you weaseled your way into :p ), your message box was full. I was gonna page you on a post to clear it out, but hey, I got three kids, a wife who's always trying to pick up sailors and marines (forget it, Silent :glare: ), two cats, and a lousy chinchilla to take care of without having to manage your mailbox on top of it!

Where was I....

Oh yes, first of all, dads are more important than rallies, so I understand what you said perfectly about that eventuality. I wish my dad were still around to share milestones with, not to mention my mom. But that's for private conversation.

Silent and I are spending the night in Portland Saturday, then heading northeast toward Glacier. From leaving Portland Sunday morning to arriving in Golden Thursday, we will be playing it by ear, seeing how far we get and how fatigued my *** is we are each afternoon. Mornings will find us plotting routes against our list of cool places we want to see.

But generally, after Glacier, it'll be Yellowstone, Custer, Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, Natasha's Strip Club, etc.

I sure hope we can catch a piece of you somewhere along the way....

Your amigo,

Hans
