Madmike2, Puppychow and I were talking about a ride this weekend, and since there is an unprecedented opportunity to do a Sierra Pass in mid-January, are considering Ebbetts Pass.

Proposed start would be meet at 9:00 AM at the Starbucks on Bidwell Street, Folsom. This is right next to the Chevron station and across from the In N Out Burger, near Iron Point Road. We can make a quick escape via Old Placerville Rd to Latrobe Road and figure things out from there. Return most likely over Hwy 88. Once in a lifetime chance to do a seasonal Sierra pass on January 14. If we get a larger group, it will be point-to-point rather than a group formation, so everyone can make their own pace. Bring GMRS radio if you have it CH-15

I vote Ebbett's. I haven't been over Hwy 4 in a loooong time...I'm thinking a couple of years, at least.

Sam (and I) just need a meet place and a time.

I suppose you could post it in case anyone else wants to join in.....

Passes may close down by the following week given current predictions of a change in the weather pattern. After that, we'll be back down in the Valley and foothills.

Be sure and take your ice skates for Lake Alpine! Take it from personal experience that riding boots aint' the hot setup. Plans already made elsewhere or we'd join ya'll on this one so have fun. The road conditions on the 1st were fine with hardly any moisture in the dark spots, but you know the usual disclaimer, YMMV.

The Starbucks on the right hand side just over the highway, below Costco?

Or the one a couple blocks up on the left?

We're talking about the Starbucks on Placerville Road below the Costco. Here is a Map of the tentative route. This Takes us out Placerville Road to White Rock then out Latrobe to Jackson Hwy. I was thinking to avoid the usual Hwy 49 route and go out Plymouth Rd to Ione, then Buena Vista and cross the Pardee Dam. A short section of Hwy 12 to Pool Station Rd, then Hwy 4 to Murphys. We can meet riders in Murphys at the Chevron if anyone is interested.

From there over Ebbetts Pass to 89 and as long as we're there, might as well pick up Monitor Pass to a gas stop and lunch at Topaz Lake. I'm thinking of a return over Kingsbury Grade to Hwy 50. Route totals 293 miles, which should bring us in at a reasonable hour.

I'm completely open to changes, including going longer to Sonora Pass, or a Hwy 88 return, but Emmigrant Trail is closed at the top.

Send me a PM with your email and I will return a Mapsource GDB or GPX file for your GPS unit.

Irish Hill has been added, and the trip out uses Scott Road to Stonehouse Rd. We have been on Latrobe quite a bit lately. New link for Google Map. Ask for Mapsource gdb by PM.

The map on Google has been set to Collaboration mode so you can edit.

I was afraid it might look like this up there, even without snow around.

So I just called the Sonora CHP office to make sure they don't close the gates in the fall anyway, just because it always snows "sooner or later." They don't. :yahoo: Gates open. Road open. I'll check the weekend job list and see if this is do-able. Sounds very tempting.

I live in Seattle. You central CA guys live in a world class street motorcycling area. It is nice here in Washington but the quality and quantity just isn't as good. Hwy 36 and Sonora Pass for example. I am green with envy. I will be in California for two weeks in May or early June. Looking like May with the lack of snowfall this year.

Just to throw a wrench into everything - Yosemite is FREE entry this weekend. Tioga Pass is also open

I'm open to that, but we need about an hour earlier start. I have a Nat'l parks pass, so entry is never a problem.

It's up to mike. The route is 421 miles door to door for me. We could meet at the Squeeze Inn in Galt (545 Industrial Rd), or at a Starbucks at 8450 Elk Grove Boulevard. That is an impressive January trek. I have a map ready and will send it to you for review.
