Okay I'm not sure this qualifies as a real technical question, but can someone tell me where I can find the engine number on a 03 before I pull too much plastic off looking for it. The owner's manual is indisposed at the moment and the service manual only gives the location of the VIN and model numbers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The engine number on ALL the Gen I bikes is on the rear of the engine, right hand side, just ahead of the swingarm pivot.

If you look in from the right, just inboard of the lower-left clutch cover bolt, you can see the raised "block" facing rearward and see the stamped numbers on it. It will take a mechanics mirror to read them.

The numbers are easily read when the rear wheel is removed, because you can look above the pivot and see the back of the engine. Perhaps you can contort yourself enough to read them from the right passenger peg area. Good luck.

Could you stick a peice of modeling clay over the spot and then remove it to read?

While I don’t think my hands qualify as small, I was able to reach in with a flashlight and read the numbers without the mechanic’s mirror! You must have some pretty big meat hooks because there was plenty of room to maneuver around that area. So, just because I was curious, okay truthfully I was bored, I took some graphite paper, white paper and placed it over the plate, rubbed and the numbers easily came up. Clay would probably work too, but a good strong flashlight worked just fine.

Thank for the help,

Donna

'In that direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, 'lives a Hatter: and in that direction,'

waving the other paw, 'lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'

"But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.

'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'

'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.

'You must be,' said the Cat, 'or you wouldn't have come here.;-)
