I have been having two problems. First, I am a forward sitting rider and get as close to the tank as possible without squeezing the cohones too much. When I ride in the daytime when the temperature is in the 90's, it gets so hot, it starts burning the insides of my thighs and the tank is so hot near where the seat is, it gets worrisome. I didn't have this problem until this summer, and am wondering if it is a major problem or something that happens to everybody. The second problem is that I was wondering if anyone gets some strange engine vibration that always starts when I hit 86 MPH exactly. It runs perfectly any other time until I get up to that speed. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated, and Thanks!! :D

There are a couple of things that you can do, all of them minor in nature but every little bit helps. A good Throttle Body sync and new plugs to start if you have not done that in awhile. A Power Commander will help a little bit in the vibration department and the bike will be smoother and more drivable to boot. I covered the bottom of my tank with a heat reflecting material as others have here. This will delay the onset of the hot tank, but not eliminate it. Just having the tank full or more full would be a big help. Do some searches on this board and you will come up with lots of information. Search for heat fixes and you may get all the info that you need.

I'm lucky. I can't sit close to the tank for other reasons.

Is it 86 regardless of gear? I mean does it vibrate in 4th and 5th gear at 86?

And, I concur if you're not wearing protective gear. If you're riding in shorts and still think it's too hot.....well try the Search feature my unprotected friend.

Moto., Brundog is right on with his reply! The pre`06s are fire dragons, well criticized for a design that allowed an extrordinary amount of heat to reach the pilot. That is why Yamaha made significant changes to the 2006 model. The problem of heat was making it way to the motorcycling press as reviewers were riding those things in hot summer weather. I have an `04 (to be switched for an `07 next spring), and it`s a gawd damned toaster oven when it`s over 85'F. I have made some remedial changes, but it is still brutal on summer days around here...I prefer to take out my trusty ole st1100 as a result! Oh, by the way, for the nay sayers: I only ride wearing proper gear. Consider yer `05 to be quite normal in this department Moto.,...too bad ...otherwise a great machine to ride!

Has the term try to be nice to the FNG mean anything to you guys?....everyone was a FNG once upon a time....(that time of the month or what?...)

Holy cow, rough crowd around here. Poor FNG was fed to the lions.

motoskir - I have an 04 and the *heat issue* has never been an issue for me. Over time, I have become convinced that one of the primary reasons the heat is NOT an issue for me is because I don't sit up against the tank. IMHO, if you sit right up against the tank, you are going to have problems that are going to be difficult to fix. The various heat fixes that have been discussed in previous threads will help to certain (probably small) degrees. (Bottom of tank insulation, insulation around back of tank/between seat) Proper riding gear will help also. I believe the PCIII reduces heat, but the hot air blast, and not so much the tank heat. But if you are right up against the tank, it's gonna be hot. So I don't know what to tell you. I would try some of the various fixes, and perhaps some new ones. For example, perhaps the Bagster tank cover that covers the whole tank will help? If bad enough, a towel between you and the seat? A custom seat that adds material between you and the tank?

Not sure why it didn't bother you during the previous summer, but it could be something simple like you are running more with a near-empty tank, your clothes are not as protective, or perhaps you are getting old and becoming a wimp.

Good luck.

As for your vibration, that is just weird. Iggy had a good start above. Try 86 mph in different gears. Still there only at 86mph? Then its a wheel balance/tire issue and not an engine issue. If it's an engine issue, you should feel the same vibration to a certain extent at any gear and at whatever speed matches a certain rpm. FJR has been know to be a little vibey in the 4000-4200 range, but that's about 70 mph, not 86. I have never heard of that.

So on the vibration thing, we need a bit more info, but I am guessing it's a tire balance/wear issue.

I agree. Sitting up close to the tank can lead to flaming bollocks syndrome. :angry2: 2 things helped me. Corbin seat allowed me to move back from the tank easily. Hiway pegs allowed me to move my legs into cooler air. The so called fixes are at best good for your psyche and little else although every little bit helps.

The vibration issue is probably wheel balance. My 05 would be a bit unruly around the ton but a rebalance did help.

The bike does get a little buzzy around 75 to 85. Both the 05 and 06 are similar in that regard. Plugs tbs may help but I doubt it will make much difference as it appears to be normal for the bike and is not that irritating anyway.

Nothing to do with being a FNG. It's basic netiquette. And if he didn't know, he does now. See? We performed a valuable service!

Besides, do you want hundreds of duplicate threads lying about?

Yes. Then maybe one will actually show up when I search. :D

No, really, what's with the search thing? Everyone gets bashed and told "DO THE SEARCH". Well, I try. SEARCH SUCKS. I realize that it is me. Really, I do. BUT, if it is that friggin' hard to find what you want, WTF? I'll just ask. Geez. I've even seen it posted that you are suposed to add little '+' marks and crap like that to actually make it work. Whaaaat? Where do I sign up for "Search 101"? While realizing my personal shortcomings and accepting the fact that I am neither an engineer nor pilot nor programmer, I would still like to find some info once in a while.

For example, go to the main forum page and type "seat" in the search box. Did you get the information that you needed? I didn't.

Maybe my expectations are too high. I am used to google. Now, that's a search that works.

Seriously. How bout some search classes? Us dumb-arses are dying out here and we get beat up every time we can't find something.

When you have the search prompt screen up, below the "Search by Keywords" you'll see "Advanced Useage Help". Select that and the magic elves produce a search help window.

Um, wrong, asbestos breath. Some pre '06's run hot, not all. Mine is just fine in hot ambient temps.

Seat? Yeah, I don't think you'd find a heck of a lot with that search. Try Russell, Mayer, Rich's, Corbin or Sergeant.... You will probably find much more info with specific names. We seldom refer to custom seats by the word "seat". ;)

Heat? What heat? Fill the tank and wear your gear. Put some insulation under the tank if it still bothers you. Seriously, it's a big bike with a high output engine. At 90F, it's going to be hot. I hear scooters are in style now....

I have some vibes over 80, but I seldom ride at that speed in my home state. After a while you get used to it, at least I did when traveling out of state for a week or so.

Ahem....yeah right and OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson are innocent too! :assassin:

As proven in a court of law, yup, they are! :****:
