Well the bride is finally going to attend an FJR rally in the US. She was always working in Sept. and never got down south with me. I attended my first EOM

in 2005 but haven't been to one since NAFO 10. Her first get together was CFR 10 and her comment after the first day was "its all about riding" and I said What did you think I was doing. Hope it will be drier than the ride home from NAFO 10.

Thinking about attending. My last EOM was Johnson City, TN. but that's because I didn't have a Feej. From the last few posts, I assume there are some decent rooms left? I don't want to wake up next to a trucker if I can prevent it.

Excellent news. I am looking forward to see you two again.

Well, Greg, you're going to see them (and me) at NERDS in VT next month, so it won't have been all that long.

I didn't notice that Jack and Jane were signed up for NERDS, though it makes sense since it is close by.

Good to know Vic, I guess I'll have to friend him then. Missed seeing him here.

Update – Hotel Recon

By Thursday evening (7/28), the constant feed of pictures on facebook and the forum from everyone headed to or in Montrose for NAFO became too much for me. Adulting sucks, but work pays the bills, and two years of hard work pouring myself into my job as the rookie on the team is starting to pay off – promotion and more doors opening…but it cost me the one thing I was looking forward to - dual sport adventure in Colorado and getting to kick AJ & Marty in the nutz...

I needed some serious two wheel therapy, and the FJR was just what was needed. 500ish miles later I was standing in the parking lot of the Ramada in Wytheville Friday evening.

From I-77, the hotel is less than a 1/10th of a mile, but the entrance sneaks up on your as you pass the two truck stop / gas station entrances just as you drop over the hill. Front desk staff was quick and courteous. The room was decent, the AC cold and lots of hot water. The rooms are all set up as exterior entrances – it’s an older building / layout – half the rooms face the parking lots, the other half face the inside courtyard where the pool is.

There is a bar / lounge on site, just beyond the front desk. They had a pretty good selection of local and regional craft beers. No liquor, only beer and wine. There was a one page menu with apps and dinner plates at decent prices. The free breakfast was a hot meal with waffle makers plus scrambled eggs and sausage, along with other typical continental breakfast options like cereal and muffins.

I met with the assistant manager in the morning and walked the banquet room – it will be an intimate affair – the room will handle our typical crowd.

Now, reality check. This is not a 5 star, top of the line resort property. It is a decent place in my opinion and for the $59 a night, it’s a very good value. I put this hotel on par with previous EOM venues – Lewisburg, Maggie Valley, etc. (decent mid-range accommodations). But I understand some expect more than a basic room when the travel or vacation; if that’s the case, there is a Fairfield Inn and Hampton Inn right across the street within walking distance – google shows them at $139 and $110/night as of this evening. So there are options should you feel the Ramada is not of your liking.

For those who look for value, we have it at the Ramada; flat screen TV, microware and mini fridge and I like having the ability to have the bike parked right outside the door (if you get a first floor exterior room). The bar is right there with food to make the perfect end to a good days riding.

There, Recon of the LZ complete. 54 days and counting…

Wayne
