Thought it would be nice to have a standard frequency for riders at large to communicate on for EOM as I know many use various radios.

This we can help keep together, warn of hazards, and help find other nearby riders who may have strayed or fell behind.

Any thoughts? I'm no expert on the matter, but can use either FRS or GMRS.

I still have not hooked up my HT to my bike yet.

I have a YAESU 2 METER, 6 METER, and 70cm.

The club I belong to talk on 2 Meters Simplex on

rides. We can select a set freq on 2 meters because

I think that is the most popular freq. 73's :clapping:

 Are you talking about FRS, GMRS, or something different?

Channels 1-7 are compatible between FRS and GMRS. So as long as we chose one of those and stay off subchannels, most folks should be able to communicate.

I doubt that most FJR people have their HAM license, so the most likely choice is FRS, as GMRS requires a license (but plenty of people use it without the license and have not been caught or fined yet.)

K8VKE, I think I'm sticking with my HT and will run simplex.

FRS has way too little power, and GMRS will run on different

freq's. If you want we can talk via the local repeaters on say

two meters. I put out 5 watts, saw you on the FCC web page.

I have CB permanantly mounted. A lot of us old time riders in New England use it for group rides.

Mr Bill, in many ways a CB is better. No need to patch in repeaters.

Its the fact I paid over $300 for my current radio that I can't see

myself(shallow person I am) buying a CB. Also time getting meee

FCC call sign too! :clapping:

Bill, you and I maybe the only ones there with a CB. Seems a lot of folks are moving to GMRS radios. However, I find my CB invaluable when cruising down the road......in some way better than a radar detector!

I get a lot of help through the cb on the interstate and I always call out on it if I see trouble.

So Grumpy and I will be the Grumpy Old Men with the CB's!

Yellowmagnaman, I look forward to you showing me that radio in action. Your radio works in the mountains where cb's and cell phones are useless I think.

My Dad and I both plan on being there this year. We had talked about it for ages and last year we bit the bullet and each installed a J&M CB. Whole thing mounts on the handlebar. Easy pushbuttons and knobs for use with gloves on. Waterproof so you can use it in the rain, and has an aux-in for MP3 player (or GPS, or radar or whatever). Also has a built in receiever for the shortwave weather broadcasts.

Personally I think its a fantastic setup. Way better than GMRS or any of those other comm's approaches out there. Truckers still use CB's alot and you can get heads up on traffic problems. Range is also excellent, we can keep chatting even when we are over a mile from each other (often further depending on terrain). The sound quality is an order of magnitude better than any other in helmet system I have ever used for either voice or music (Judged both on volume and clarity).

The downside is the whole setup (antenna, helmet speakers, CB unit) is a bit pricey. But it delivered everything I expected and more. I would spend the money again if I had to.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Make that three of us, Bill. ;)

Although I'm also set up for GMRS radio with the switch of one plug. Both radios mounted right next to each other at all times.

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it, you guy's are older then dirt. Now if I could just figure out a way to mount my 8-track on my scoot..........................

Another nice thing about CB is that it's on the am band. Nice crappy sound and you can hear the crackle of lightning strikes on the radio. I can always get my kids hollering just by putting the car radio on am, "What's that awful sound!" they yell.

Rad

8 track? What the heck is that? Sounds like someplace Simon and Garfunkel played.

Nobody here is that old!

I have a chatterbox set up (yeah I know flame away many here don't like them but works okay for me to talk with the little lady when she's on my bike or hers)

Have always wanted to mount a CB (ha ha he said "mount") they are eggcellent on long slab rides as you can find out about a myrid of things long before you get to them.

with the JB set up does it use a mic in your helmet (have drooled over them in mag. adverts for couple years now but haven't pulled that trigger yet)

I had to remove the 8 track player because the match book wouldn't stay under the corner of the tape to keep it aligned so it would play on the bike :angry2:
