I went for a ride yesterday in my 2010 and as usual I reset my trip meter. Sometime into the ride I look at my MPGs and see 99.9 MPGs...a second later it goes to 46.7 and a second later it goes to 50 something. This happened at 66 MPG (GPA indicated) constant speed. This continued all the way until I got back home-always fluctuating all over the place. The needle gauges work as everything else in the bike and there are no error codes. Also I suspect the fuel level graph is also wrong as it seems to have dropped 3 bars in 30 minutes,,,anyone seen this before? I hope I do not have to replace the unit altogether. This bike does not see rain and there is no visible spider corrosion. Everything looks fine. I replaced the headlight bulbs last month and recently lubed all pivots. Seems to be working fine otherwise

You are looking at instantaneous MPG, not average!!!

You don't have any problem.

Edit to add: In average MPG mode, the display updates once per kilometer (even with a USA bike). It represents the mileage since the last reset or some sort of moving average (maybe 300 miles?) if the display is not reset.

The instantaneous MPG updates every few seconds and will fluctuate from maybe 10 MPG under acceleration to 99.9 (max reading) when you let off the throttle.

Can't comment on your fuel gauge...

If that turns out to the the answer that is pretty hilarious. The instantaneous is the one I watch in the middle of NV when I'm sure I won't make it to the next gas station. Going into a full tuck and keeping around 55mph definitely bumps up the # on that reading...

I added some comments to my original reply...

If I am some distance from a gas stop when I go into reserve, I will sometimes reset the avg MPG and monitor that. I know that the bike has just over 1.5 gallons when the reserve indicator starts so I watch the MPG and compare to the count-up ODO. Keeps me riding conservatively if the next station is much more than 50 miles (I have done 70 miles on reserve).

I never thought of instantaneous feedback down to the second, interesting, I will not reset the meter next time and see what happens. I take it it should "stabilize" with more miles on the clock during a longer trip. This ]forum is amazing, thanks to all for your help and wisdom.

There are actually two DIFFERENT settings. One is instantaneous updated every few seconds and represents just the mileage averaged since the last reading (not quite instantaneous).

The average MPG is the actual mileage since the last reset and only updates once per kilometer (~ 0.62 mi). This changes a fair amount for the first 20 miles or so but slower after that. As I mentioned, this becomes some sort of running average (the last 300-ish miles) if the display is not reset. Have a look at your owner's manual.

Average is going to be average, and realtime is going to be realtime, regardless of trip length. If I'm understanding you FJR30FAN. If you reset average and immediately go into afterburner for a while, average isn't going to fluctuate rapidly, but it's going to, correctly, be a low average.

Once I reset, it went all over the place regardless of speed. I kept speed at 66 MPH for a minute and saw rapid significant fluctuations every second or so. I even saw higher MPG readouts when accelerating and lower when decelerating thus my concerns.

Are you certain that you were in Average MPG mode and not instantaneous? Average does not update frequently and readings are far more stable. In switching modes on the Gen II, it goes from air temperature to instantaneous MPG to average MPG as the button is cycled. Holding the button down in the average mode resets it - display will remain blank until you have ridden one km to start the process.

It must have been on instantaneous mode. I will check that out when I take another ride. I cycled the display through temp and mpg modes a couple of times so it is possible.

^^^ you are a candidate for the infamous auxiliary fuel tank mod.
