I honestly did a search for this topic and got a lot of irrelevant stuff, so excuse me if this has been flogged to death:

The heat is bothering me this summer, and I was wondering if anyone can provide commentary about chnaging the entire exhaust system to, for example, a Holeshot header and titanium cans, and what losing the catalytic converter does to reducing the lower leg heat?

If it does lower the heat, I would consider doing this. Anyone?

Jim

There's a couple who've done it... I believe Radman said his is a lot cooler with Dale's header... and possible fjrvtx1300....

And you are worried about heat from Kapuskasing...???...!!!!

When I went thru there on my snowmobile in February it was 40 below zero.... I cannot believe it has warmed up THAT much...!!!!

I put the Holeshot header on to eliminate the cats and I feel it helps the low speed and idling heat quite a bit. At any sort of speed I don't think the cats cause rider heat because they are so low but certainly sitting in traffic directly over them they put a lot of heat out. I used Staintune mufflers with the Holeshot pipe and it worked out nicely.

There are a couple of other heat mods mentioned in other posts if you search around that cover insulating the tank and sealing off the air flow by the sides of the fairing.

The biggest gain in heat reduction that I did is covered in another post..... https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=8936

My 03 is relatively cool now. As cool as any motorcycle I have ever ridden, anyway. No pun intended.... LOL.

Jestal,

Any suggestions before I remove my headers this winter? Are there any gaskets or retaining springs I should get ahead of time? Plus any other bits of information that would help me break my habit of saying, "OH, ****!"

I'm going to have the local welders remove the catalysts for me.

dobias :glare:

PS: Heat is a relative thing. It's especially noticeable for us traveling from God's Country down through Hell's Kitchens of Detroit or Chicago.

I have the full Holeshot system by Dale Walker and I'm really happy with it, in terms of quality, the heat reduction by the feet as Jestal explained and for the slightly raspy exhaust note. Overall an A+ farkle in my book :D

No springs, there is a gasket at each exhaust port that needs to be replaced. Since the header is coming off, this would be a good time to service the relay arm, as it needs the center stand removed to get at the front bolt, which requires the header bent down or removed to get at two of the bolts retaining the stand. Reverse these at re-installation to eliminate the need to remove the exhaust next time. Oh, and I agree with jestal, the HS header reduces heat at stops and low speeds, but the cats are not a factor at speed. A plus, I believe, for the header is reduced heat trailing back onto the shock/relay arm area, which can only help reduce heat stress on these parts.
