Hmmm. WTF is D&H? Are you the wise guy at this forum ? ;-) I will keep an eye
No Mr. Newbie. He's just answering a very popular question with a very popular answer. I suggest as Noob you check out #24 in this Great New Owner's FAQ by one of our members.

I also highly suggest becoming one with the Search feature of this board.

Enjoy your visit.

Wooo, tough crowd, tough crowd, I tells ya!

D&H is a Yamaha dealer somewhere in the south. Typically, they have the best price on the YES plan and can sell it to you so long as you don't live in Florida or pick your toes in Poughkeepsie. Do you pick your toes in Poughkeepsie? :dntknw:

Y'all are so nice to a newbie! As if I am supposed to know where to look or do random searches ...

Anyway, no offense taken. One of the reasons I love bikes is because of great friendships over time ...

No, I don't pick my toes in Poughkeepsie. I don't want to offend anyone B)

Okay then, would you like a more direct answer?

1.) Yes, we recommend the Yamaha Extended Service contract.

2.) No, we don't recommend paying $600. D&H Motorsports in Cullman Alabama will sell you the same YES for $389.

If you use the search function on the top tool bar of this forum for D&H, Extended Warranty or Y.E.S you should find the information you need (I don't have their number handy, but I called them and purchased mine from them, over the phone, with a credit card)

Yes, thank you. I will call them in AL.

You will need your V.I.N. when you call. The price quote is good as that is THEIR price. They are very nice people to deal with. You have 1 year from the original sale date to buy the extended warranty.

The question that never got answered, is whether it is worth it or not, regardless of the price.

In general, manufacturers make big money off these extended warranties becasue odds are you won't ever collect on it.

The problem is compounded when most manufactures start to scrutinize warranty repairs as the vehicle ages, and will deny many claims and tell you "that is a normal wear item". Sometimes a dealer can get a claim through if they really want to, and it probably depends more on how good your dealer is, if you get a claim to pass.

However, keep in mind the problem this bike has had with valve guides, becasuse if it develops this problem it will need major engine work and the extended warranty could save your hiney if it happens. Having an extended warranty is also an advantage if you sell the bike to an individual, as it can be used as a selling point.

But in the end, the chances are good that you won't ever get your money back out of it. The valve problem is "supposed" to be fixed on the 06 model. If you do your own work on the bike anyway, you might want to consider going without it. I doubt I will get it. That $360 will just about pay for my new Givi trunk and rack.

I bought my '05 in July of '05. I thought about the YES and decided to wait and see how reliable my FJR was. While the year went by and 21k miles went on, the bike performed flawlesssly. I did not buy the YES.

Hyundai's come with what, a 10 year 100k mi warranty? In My Opinion the bike should cost ~300 more and come with a 5 year warranty; it comes with tires doesn't it?? I bought the extended warranty (paid too much, btw), haven't needed it yet, hope not to.

Pepperell

I thought I saw something in here somewhere about a dealer in Indiana also selling YES for a great price. Anyone else see that?

Fred, what's the problem w/ valve guides? I plan to buy the 06/07 model so this might not affect me!?

As you said, if it proves to be reliable for a year then I probably wouldn't recover the money.

I think I will wait just under a year before deciding on a YES ...

I am considering a new FJR ...
Do you recommend $600+ for a 3 year extended waranty?
 As mentioned earlier about 6% of the '03, '04 and '05 bikes had a problem with the valve guides and the owners who had purchased the YES and had work done are probably glad they had the YES program.

What is your peace of mind worth?

The chances are you will probably not need any major work done on your Yamaha, especially if it's an '06 as the valve and heat flow problem seem to have been addressed. These bikes are pretty much bullet proof and if properly maintained according to the maintenance schedule you should never have a problem.

If your the kind of individual who subscribes to life, auto, home owners, medical, motorcycle, accidental death insurance, etc.,etc., the Y.E.S. extended warranty would be right along those lines.

Once again the question is what is your peace of mind worth?

In the search box, type in tick and in another search, type in guides. Prepare for a tsunami of information on the valve guides. To take a wild guess, ~5% of Gen 1 FJRs have developed the 'tick' and a few have been repeat tickers. The problems gets so much attention because it is serious work to fix. If there is any good news it is 1. the motor continues to run, just a bit weaker, it won't leave you beside the road 2. if you can stand the tick you can choose when to have it fixed, say over the winter 3. this is a biggie, if you find a competent dealer they will work with Yamaha and the fix will be covered by Yamaha. The Gen 2 FJRs are still to new to know if the problem has been solved.

Edited: I see SMC snuck in a post while I was typing ;) Yamaha has covered the Tick repair even outside the YES program.

Come to Canada and pay $1k+ for a 4 year deal. Even with the exchange it makes the $389 D&H deal look like a steal.

P's me off that our southern cousins would complain while it's us in the Great White North who are getting ripped. :p :p At least we have better beer. :alcoholic:
