The dust shield on the rear wheel of a '06 FJR is held on with three M5 X .08 Phillips panhead screws.

At least two of those screws are held with red Loctite®

The head of the screw may snap off before the Loctite lets loose.

The three screws are on a 180mm bolt hole circle.

The tap drill for an M5 is a 4.20mm. (a number 19 twist drill is close enough)

Try a 1/8" left twist drill first; you may get lucky.

..no wait.. lucky is what I would have gotten if I hadn't been such a dumb shit two hours ago.

At least we now know what size those pesky screws are...and the proper drill size to boot. Is this one of those instances where "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comes into play?

Sorry for your late night misfortune...

Up until a few weeks ago, I was drinking way too much coffee. Two and a half or three weeks ago, I quit. I drank water instead; no reason, just decided to take a break.

I had one cup this morning and man did that taste good! Three hours later I was back to my regular dose, three 20 ounce cups. Only now, my tolerance was gone. I was wired... still am...

caffeine induced stupidity. That's how I snapped the head on that screw. There was no reason to mess with it. It was the caffeine. I got the idea in my head that I may as well clean under that dust shroud and I just locked on that idea. Shit.

Yeah. Evil bean.

If they put red on it, they didn't really intend for it to ever come out again. Only heat will break the superhuman grip of red locktite.

I didn't see the red until it was too late. You're right about the heat too. The heat of a drill going down it's center will break it loose. Red Bastard.

Next time, when I’m reaching for an extension cord to plug in the heat gun that I intend to use to heat the rim (carefully don’t want to blister that paint)… Will I question the madness of it?

I have a picture in my head of me telling that story in a CA meeting. “Hello, my name is Joe…â€

Enjoy the weekend

Edit: O.K., so CA is Cocaine Anonymous. I meant CA as Caffeine Anonymous.

Joe,

Don't kick yourself too hard. I raced sailboats for 25 years in SF. The worst nightmare you could have was stainless steel fasteners in Aluminum (corrosion welded). If I really wanted to get into trouble all I had to do was to contemplate removing "this or that" to check it knowing full damn well that the guy that put it in didn't coat the fastener (usually some lanolin) with anything and that it was going to snap off, drill out, re-tap etc. And looking back it was usually after having a few cups of the old java and feeling invincible on a summer morning. :dribble:
