During a search of threads on FD seal replacement, a link to a Yamaha Venture FD seal replacement "how to" was posted. It indicated measuring gear lash and showed the dial gauge for measuring that.

Has anyone here who has replaced their seals done anything regarding gear lash????

I'm not mechanically inclined, but Griff is helping me with this project and I am ready to learn new stuff regarding the guts of the FJR. Griff does not have this tool. He was wondering what others had done wrt this as the Venture "how to" link shows this gauge and mentions measuring gear lash.

Edit: Yamaha Venture FD "how to" link

On the one we did for Low and Silent, we did not measure the gear lash. We did look to see where the wear pattern was on the gears and the wear pattern was right in the middle. Since we did not pull the pinnion gear, just removed and replaced the bearing retaining nut that holds the seal in place. We didn't disturb the pinnion bearing or gear so we did not worry about the lash being changed.

If you pull the pinnion gear, then you will definitely need to measure the lash and possibly change the shims to get it properly centered. (or if you see unsual wear when you take it apart for the seal)

What happened to Bounce's post? It was before Auburn's post...
As an admin, Bounce may have administered an admin edit to his own post. Dunno if they should be self administering

I was just hopin' it wasn't Bounce getting voted off the island...

Well, so far we have Bounce's post (since deleted) and Auburn's post...

...so far nobody mentioning that they have measured and adjusted the gear lash on the FJR while replacing seals.

Anybody??

Well, I have never adjusted the gear lash on the final drive. But then, I have never taken it apart either. So there's another data point for ya! :p

Wheatie-- Auburn summed it up, there's no need to check the back lash if the pinion is not removed and/or pinion depth shims messed with. FYI, the pinion depth and side to side shimming of the ring gear establish the mesh (pattern) on the gear set.

Good luck with the seal replacement!

The only adjustment needs be done on the device sitting between the bars and seat is what I'm hearing, Wheatie! ;)

When I did mine I took it all apart to see what it looked like. I Put the shims back where they were and used white lead to check the patern and it's been just fine. I did change the pinion bearing because I thought it had to much play but the new one was the same.
