I have a 2005 FJR 1300 with 35k magnificent miles on it including 3 Iron Butt certified rides. It is a great LDR bike when set up for LDRs vice the sporting aspect of the bike.
I recently purchased a mint condition 1991 ST1100 with 50k miles on it. It was in perfect condition and had all the required Honda maintenance done on it including the 40kw alternator upgrade. I bought the bike primarily to do a comparison with the FJR.
I have put almost 3k miles on it and I must admit I like it very much. It does everthing less quickly than the FJR but the slowness in all aspects does not make the ST an inferior bike. It is a blast to ride. I like the higher gearing better for high speed cruising than the FJR. It gets about the same 40mpg at 70-85 cruising speeds as the FJR. I also do not find the heavier weight of the ST to be objectionable, it only makes steering and braking less quick than the FJR.
I put Sampson 2" setback risers on it and a Travelcade Saddleman saddle. Those changes made it more comfortable for my 5'9" body with 35" sleeve length and 30" legs. I also added 2 powerlet 12vdc outlets, a dash shelf and a Lowrance GPs and a Laminar Lip windshield on it.
I must admit that taking fairing and other plastic cowlings off the ST is much easier than the FJR. Also it is much less a heat from the fairing area than the FJR. Also, though my FJR is not a "ticker" neither is the ST 1100.
Hope this is useful.
