Did a six hour round trip today and I hadn't been in the saddle that long since 1972...(reminds me of the old joke about the pilot who told the doctor he hadn't had sex since 1955...well, he added, it's only 2130 now!)...anyway, I'd done a cross country back then and have just got back into biking. Have done several one or two hour rides building up to this and the ole FJR performed beautifully. Had two others (cruisers) following and we rode from Lakeland (Florida) through the Green Swamp, up to Groveland, Howie-in-the-Hills, Tavares, Eustis, Umatilla, Altoona, and then across to Paisley and to De Land and up to De Leon Springs State Park for pancakes at the Old Sugar Mill Restaurant. Kinda neat, you cook your own pancakes on a hotplate built into the table. After about an hour or so of R and R we headed back. This time we went to Eustis on a different route, then through Tavares to Mt. Dora, down through Lake Jem, Astatula, and by Sugar Loaf, one of the higher roads in central Florida where a lot cyclists try to prove their worth. Then we proceeded through Minneola to Clermont and back through the Green Swamp and home.
A fabulous ride. The weather was quite warm (90's) but no rain. The roads were great. Not much traffic and many, many curves and some elevation. The longer stretches allowed me to get comfortable with the Throttle Meister and I was very happy with its performance.
To anyone who says there are no places to ride in Florida I say, "Come on down, we'll show ya!" Quite evident, I might add, by the large number of bikers we saw today. By-the-way, have we mellowed over the years? I remember years ago the salute was a "Black Power" styled fist pump and now it's a casual, lowered hand wave or a more casual V for victory flash. Luckily we didn't see any middle finger salutes!
