as a 'be prepared' motorcyclist, I was stranded for the first time.

Rear felt squishy -- stopped to check it... no worries -- patch kit, Co2 inflater, etc... done this many times... not problem right?

but -- there was a gash i was not going to be able to repair.... crap.

called a friend ( and to define a 'friend' -- those are the ones that come when you're stranded), he trailered me to the nearest dealer -- who had zero decent tires (no Michelins, no Avons, no Bridgestones, not even a Mezzler -- they did have some Shinko's -- but.....)

SO crap tire installed..... but at least im happy to have a tire that can hold air!.. there was a rusty piece of metal about 4" X 1" they found inside as they re-tired me.

Lesson for me? no matter how much crap I pack -- i can still get stranded. need to sign up for that RV / motorcycle AAA thing.... i'll have to search for it now..

bummer.

All's well that ends well. I have had more flats that I care to remember, but always repairable. I have the roadside assistance through my insurance company, but fortunately, have never had to use it.

ok -- searched, but can't find it...

someone posted the ultimate towing/emergency service that included RVs, motorcycles, boats, and anything on a trailer.... but can't find it.... searched and searched......... (i suck)...

any help?

I think you'll find Shinko isn't the crap tire you think it is. It may not be top of the line but most riders couldn't tell the difference. Especially if its the 009 Raven.

Better be careful about AAA for motorcycles, and please share your findings.

I just interviewed AAA on the phone a couple weeks ago, asking specifically about their motorcycle/RV coverage. It has very limited towing distances and does NOT cover repair of motorcycle flats. (According to the AAA Rep I spoke with.)

So, I opted to keep searching.

AAA RV Plus does the job for you. Of course me being Mr. Anal, I have that, plus Foremost Insurance which also does the same thing. So....I like to be prepared and have a back-up. Big deal. It is...............my way. Something must have happened in my childhood. Oh yeah, now I remember....

I joined Motorcycle Touring Services to take care of such emergencies.

They have an excellent service package for a reasonable price and they specialize in motorcycle hauling if you need it. I believe they contract to many towing services throughout the country and make certain that they can handle motorcycles correctly.

Adding AAA RV services to my AAA membership was MUCH more expensive that MTS.

Other than purchasing a service contract with them, I have no other connections to the company.

have used AAA with extra cost RV PLUS coverage for m/c and find it good. nothings perfect, but AAA has more tow trucks under contract than anyone else i bet, so the area coverage is a bigee for me.

plus AAA covers you in your car, (or motorhome ) too.

unaware of ^^^m/c touring services. does it work well?

+1 - Dairyland Insurance included money for a hotel if stranded over 100 miles from home and the cost extra per month was next to nothing.

I have hazard insurance through state farm. They reimburse you for towing. Most plans only pay for repair of the tire if it can be patched, if the sidewall is muffed your screwed anyway. Towing is the most expensive part anyway. Check with you carrier to see what they offer.
