FJR AE problem after cltuch soak - please help

Folks, I just did a clutch soak and now my FJR is throwing up error SH__26 and occasionally SH__44.

I can start the bike if I power cycle it quickly, but any attempt to shift into second fails and then the bike enters a very (repeatedly) juddery movement (having previously moved forward okay in first).

If I run the bike on the centre stand and let the back wheel spin in first, then the ABS light flashes.

If anyone knows how to help I'd be very grateful. If you're not able to suggest a solution, telling me how I can:

1) Reconfigure the clutch actuator on the computer

2) Do anything else on the computer relating to the clutch

3) Reset the fault codes

4) a list of the SH error codes (I cant find them on forum despite seeing them several times before)

would be very helpful.

According to the Factory Service Manual SH_26 is "Abnormal clutch movement detected during check when main switch is turned to ON" It goes on to say that this is caused by low clutch fluid or air in the hydraulic system. So, try bleeding the clutch and make sure there is plenty of fluid in the reservoir.

SH_44 is "Clutch actuator sensor signal is abnormal" This indicates a defective clutch actuator sensor. It may be unplugged or out of alignment.

ABS light flashing when you run the bike in gear on the centre stand is normal, its recognising the difference in front and rear wheel speeds.

Ok folks. Fixed it. Let it run in first gear a few times up and down road and it slowly got better.

My guess is that when you pulled the clutch apart the "pin" relaxed against the slave cylinder. Until everything was run and back to "normal" the computer was reading the new position as an error.

If you did not bleed the clutch system, I would do so.

Eventually you're going to bleed the clutch as a matter of periodic maintenance. I'm not familiar with the AE model but that fluid has to be changed as does any hydraulic fluid.

I'm guessing there is an override or bypass so that the clutch will activate for bleeding purposes. OR use a MityVac brake bleeder.

Yes, there is an override for clutch bleeding. Unfortunately, you have to remove the swing arm to access it.

Much better to use a Mityvac on the bleeder valve.

If you want to bleed the clutch fluid: Take off the slave cylinder and bleed it by pumping it out by hand. Take off the 3 bolts on the slave, put your box wrench on the bleeder screw, stick your drain hose on the bleeder and your ready to go. I hook it up to a vacuum pump as well but it is not necessary. Squeeze the slave cylinder between your thumb and fingers, and turn the wrench on the bleeder screw with the other hand. Easy peasy. Watch the resevoir, it's really small, only 2-3 bleeds before you empty it! Refill the resevoir 3-4 times and your done. Easy as that. 15 min, not 5 hours.

IMHO don't soak your clutch. It's a temporary fix at best and it doesn't cure the problem. Letting the bike sit for long periods is one of the main reasons. The bike is basically telling you Ya gotta get out and ride me more!

Letting it warm up while in gear can help because half the plates are spinning in oil, pulling oil over the rest of them while the clutch is disengaged. Be forewarned, I have heard of some peoples bike lurching forward and falling over, so put it on the center stand if your worried about that. Not sure that is only an AE thing or if it affects any standard clutch FJR's. I haven't had that problem in my 2 years with my AE, but my idle is a bit on the low side for the clutch to be engaging, even when the idle is high on a cold start.

Odd, I did the clutch soak on my AE and had none of these issues.

Yes, my bike did sit for a while, but it was't my fault, I just hadn't bought it yet. Sat in a shed at a car dealer not being moved. Herky jerky clutch movement was solved by a soak and frequent riding (commuting) has kept it all good since then.

My bike has covered some 5k miles in the last 9 months, 1k in the last six weeks. So my problems aren't down to infrequent riding.

Ill bleed clutch later this week and see if that solves it.

The dealer were supposed to have bled clutch 9 months ago. So I'm unsure whether they did. They certainly charged for it.

I'm curious what they got for the clutch $ervice? How many hours is the flat rate on it?
