I have an 08 FJR I bought new in Septemberof 09. I live in Fargo, ND so I get to ride maybe 8 months/yr if I'm lucky. I love my bike and have 29,000 miles with 0 problems. So I'm down here in Florida (flew down) visiting my family and decided to stop at the local BMW/Ducati/Triumph dealer. Boy the Multistrada and the 1600GT sure are pretty. $20,000 and $25,500 respectively. I asked the dealer if I do my oil changes would it affect the BMW'S warranty. It voids it he replied. I then inquired the price of an oil change. He calmly said it runs $300 but that includes the rear dif and $14/qt oil. WTF!!!!! I'd have to drive a 400 mile round trip to get my $300 oil change. Jeeze I sure love my Yamaha. Crazy ole world we live in!

BMW ~ Bring My Wallet

Of course there are those who have spare coins or don't mind spending their coin BMW's demand. I am not one of those.

If they tell you it voids the warranty to do your own work then I believe there is a consumer protection law that says they have to provide it free of charge. I forget the name of the law but I'm sure somebody will post it up soon.

While I'll agree that dealer maintenance on a BMW is generally more expensive than a Yamaha, owner-maintenance on a BMW is neither difficult or warranty threatening (unless something has changed recently).

I'm curious... which Florida dealer told you this?

I love my FJR. Fast, reliable, easy to maintain, least $ in its class, best looking sport tourer.

I used to have a Honda VFR 800, the new VFR 1200 catches my eye and I pay attention to it. Has anyone else notice Honda prices lately? $18k for the ST 1300 and $16K for the VFR1200 w/o bags, heated grips, etc. They have BMW prices!

EXACTLY why I don't own a Beemer anymore. ;)

Well designed, nice features, nice ride.

Overpriced bike, service, & parts.

One huge design flaw, the drivetrain. Yeah 3 clutches and 2 input shafts in 60K is a little much, not to mention having to pull the entire *** end of the bike apart to get to the tranny or lube the splines that go south if you don't. It's a weekend job each year, or pay BMW $850 to do it.

BTW - That $300 covers a lot of other checks on the bike, God forbid if you need any of them adjusted, that's moer $$. Then go and trade in the bike at the same dealer you bought it from. They tore my bike up as a piece of *****, offered me well under low BB. I tossed that puppy so fast PP, got the Feej and never looked back.

That's my K-bike rant. Back to regularly scheduled forum bantering. :p

Doing your own maintenance on a BMW does not void the warranty any more than doing your own maintenance on your FJR.

I really like some of their bikes, but the initial cost keeps me sane. The motorcycle sales manager at Sandia BMW here in Albuq. is a good friend of mine. I was visiting him the other day and we were yacking when I noticed the red K1300S sitting on the floor. It is ******* divine and he offered me a smoking deal. However, that 175bhp bike stickers at 18grand, and I would have to start over with the farkles. I'd have to buy bags, risers, windshield...All kinds of stuff I don't want to have to spend money on.

If not for that, and the fact that I love my FJR so much, that bad boy would be in my garage right now!

I bet that ***** would cost you plenty of pennies if you dropped it!

Naaaaa...I have really good insurance, and I wouldn't let any ******-bags with a car tire on their bike get their cooties on my bike.

Speaking of that...After I got home the other day, I realized I should have rode to LA with you and then just rode home on Sunday...What a dork, I can't believe I missed it.

Hey Daviddowns

We ought to send a copy of that info to the dealership that claimed a warrantee was voided when an owner did their own oil changes.

And speaking of the high price of German steel, that's exactly why I don't own one. I've thought about Beemers more than once, but I don't see any reason to own one. Especially when the best bike my money can buy is sitting in the garage.

Why buy a Beemer? My FJR looks as good if not better than any Beemer. I service it myself, it kicks butt and besides everywhere I got I get asked, "That's a BMW right?"

You've clearly never lived in Florida.
Right you are and I wouldn't consider it in this lifetime But it is a Federal law and it applys nation wide :p
