I was getting ready to ride up to a car show with some guys from my shop this afternoon. I do auto detailing and rent space in a repair facility. I keep the FJR nice and snug in my corner. The shop floor has a nice light grey epoxy coating on it. Looks nice, but gets real slick from detailing spray and oil from the cars that are serviced there, we do wash it down regularly. Need I say more....

I was just pulling the bike out, no more then 5mph. It's 5PM, we're also pulling a few cars in for the evening.

I'm headed twards the door, a car is coming in through the door, I touch the front brake, turn slightly to the right to go around the entering vehicle and the next thing I know I'm down. It happened so quick, seemed like a split second, the front wheel simply slipped right out from under me. I've been riding for almost 20 years, this is the first time I've ever layed a bike down.

After I pick it up, I go straight back to my corner and attempt to buff out the nice scuffs on the right lower cowling. No use, it's cracked where the vent holes are as well. The mirror took a shot on the Caddy that was parked next to the door, seems OK but vibrates on the highway a bit now. The exhaust is unmarked, I think the foot peg saved it somehow.

Enough about the bike, I have a severly pulled muscle in my lower left back. My right knee hurts like he11 and I'm sure a black and blue will be clearly visible come tomorrow morning. Of course this happened in front of everybody who works with me so my ego is brused as well, but they all know the floor was to blame here.

After a quick touch up with some silver paint, wet sand and buff to blend it in, I was on my way to the car show. It was a big show, had some very nice custom cars, as well as the old classics. A few bikes were also on display, mostly choppers with outrageous paint jobs of naked women on them. To each is own, the ride was great, I'm headed to Yamaha to order a new lower cowling tomorrow morning.

Applying the front brake while turning at slow speeds will bring you to the ground nearly every single time.

Sorry to hear it. At least it was at 5mph instead of 55mph. Hope you don't bruise to bad. At least the car show was a good end to the day. Take care and heal quick.

That sucks...glad your not seriously hurt....bet we know what you won't ever do again  ....still I feel your pain....

Sorry to hear that you went down. My duaghter dropped fell over twice last year on two different bikes by grabbing the front brake with the wheel turned.

You can save yourself some bucks if you contact Gary McCoy at University Motors in SD for that lower fairing. Look in the vendor section for contact information.

Bad luck, sorry about that...

Silver lining... at least you've got some expertise in repairing/repainting the damage...

Ouch! Front brake lockup, or turning with front brake will take you down instantly. Use the rear brake in situations like you described not the front. I have a dirt grass driveway and it is also slippery when wet. Now you know what to avoid doing again. Hope you heal fast. TJ

:(

Sorry to hear about you mishap, hope your back & knee heal up soon.

Do you have frame sliders? Might want to get them if you do not, if you do what type do you have?.

Similar thing happened to me on my ZX9 Ninja. I was leaving the parking lot at work onto a street and a building blocked my view to the left until almost at the street. Had the wheel turned to go left and a car was coming so hit the brake. Front wheel locked in a small patch of sand in the parking lot causing the bike to go down.

Resulted in a broken fibula of the left leg with plate and 8 screws to fix and twisted and sprained left knee requiring surgery to fix it. Not going more than 5 mph. Just bad luck.

Nice description...ouch....& I mean big time....

Sorry to hear about it. At least you weren't in the middle of a ride after those minor injuries like when I dropped mine...

Yeah, it sux, but don't feel rained on. I dropped mine at Lowe's. On a Saturday. Wasn't even moving.

Ordered the replacement parts today as well as a few other things I needed. Yamaha got 500 big ones from me today. I'm definately sore, no gym for a few days. Got 2 nice black and blues on my right leg too.

Kills me to see the bike scratched up, but it can and will be fixed shortly.

I'll try to keep my foot closer to the rear brake when I'm crawling at slow speeds. Hopefully, an incident like this wount happen again.
