I was just up on Mt. Washington this past thursday! Foggy and cool about 62*F low to no visability, but no rain! That really is a neat place, I love going up there.
Are we going up Mt Washington?! :yahoo:

I was there in '95 in a car and was pretty ...nervous then. What odds I'll be more brave on a Feej ?

I'll give it my best shot though :)

ps - no way I'm riding sweep
Just keep your eyes on the road :eek:neeyedsmiley: , NEVER LOOK DOWN  , and you'll be fine. :bike: (at least that's what I tell myself every time I go)
Any chance there are guardrails now ?
:lol2:
The Axeman and I were up there around the 4th and the wind picked up to 50mph+ for the trip down-serious pucker factor and no stinkin guardrails...

So far I've mapped out our trip for coming up on Thursday half way. I think I'll head for Grand Gorge, NY by:

taking Rt6 out of Scranton to Rt191 to Rt30.

For the trip Friday I was thinking Rt30 to Rt29 to Rt4

So what do ya think so far. Keep in mind I don't have GPS so I'm trying to keep it simple with only a little slab.

Thanks,

Keith

That sounds OK, but if you want I can meet you at the intersection of Rt30 & Rt29. From there I can take you along the Sacandaga Lake,(which is fun), and up to Rt4 without running Rt29.

Depends on timing. I was thinking of leaving around noon. Also I'll be 2up and making a couple of stops. That would put us there around 4:30 or 5:00.

Sounds great! I'll PM ya with some contact info when we get closer to that weekend in August. It looks like that intersection may be about 2hrs from Grand Gorge. I'm also not sure where else we could find something like a Holiday inn express just in case we feel like riding further on Thursday. I'll do some exploring on the net and thanks for the offer. Now I want July to be over with so we can ride lol.

Kay my 'mebbe attending' buddy FJRRob1300 is officially out on this one, so it looks like I'm looking for a bunkie to split the room with. Arriving Friday, Departing Monday.

If I can't find anybody to split the room with, I'm gonna build the mother of all forts!

You'll enjoy Route 30 around the Pepacton. WooHoo!

There is a nice little covered bridge in Downsville that's worth taking a ride through. If you go across the bridge and turn left it will take you back to Route 30 where you turn right and the good stuff begins.

And after you go past Grand Gorge you'll come to Middleburg where there is another covered bridge worth taking a look at. You can't ride through this one so you'll have to park and walk across if you're interested.

What kind of speed limits are rt30? I'm hoping 45 to 50 say we can keep the pace up a bit.
I ride parts of 30 at least once a week, but I honestly don't remember the speed limit. It probably varies between 45 and 55. In NY the default speed limit on rural roads is 55 unless posted. You can easily average 65 or more except in the small towns. Enforcement in NY has been stepped up this year for revenue generation purposes, so you need to keep a sharp eye out for the LEOs. If you use a radar detector it will give you plenty of warning because the LEOs typically run with the radar on full time.

Agreed. I95 is the scourge and should be avoided at most any cost.
Sounds like we'll have flks coming frm far and wide to join in this weekend of riding. It should be a heck of a god time.

For those arriving on Friday afternoon or evening, the usual dealis to rumble over to the 7 barrel brewery (conveniently located across the parking lot from the Hotel) for libation and food stuff. Being that it is one of the better brewpubs in all of NH (not a huge claim) it's worth the visit.

We've also ended up there on Sat night as well in the past, but a better choice is Jesse's Steak house just a few miles away. If some folks want to head there ( and remain sober enough to get back) on Saturday we can call ahead and make a reservation.
Count the bride and myself in for the steak house Sat night :yahoo:

:yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Reservations made: check in Fri, check out Mon

thanks so much to all that made this possible :) -- Also, a great savings on regular room rate for these dates (reg. 139.95) :clapping: :clapping:

will leave charlottesville, VA at 0-dark thurty Fri am and traverse the Yahoo maps quoted 697 miles (I 95 would save me 90 miles, but I just can't bring myself to ride that road for a measley 60 minutes) ;) to see ya'all on Friday evening for the short jaunt to the "pub" 'cross the parkin lot... (coming up I 81 to I84 to Hartford, then I91 --- yeah, yeah, yeah, I know; slab the whole way, but the miles I put getting there, I have to put in to returning.... and my narrow *** can only take so much --- oh, and speaking of which, no thanks on the "door prize" Mr. Bill  :nono: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

plan is to leave for the top of Mount Washington Mon. am then maybe over to an old friends house in Shrewsbury, VT where I used to live (alas, only had cages back then) :( --- have to mapquest it though, as I'm unsure of amount of miles that would entail, and imagine Mount Washington takes a sizeable chunk of time all by itself... no worries though, don't have to be back to work till Thursday :yahoo:

Guess this means I will need to get those new tires after all.... ain't it great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am REALLY looking forward to this :)

BTW: count me in for the Steak and chowda on Saturday also please

and I don't know what the head count is but when I reserved the room tonight the "block" of rooms was already full

gonna be great seeing old faces and meeting new ones

Hey C J : how bout we keep it out the gravel on this one???

Hey Gary,

I will be leaving Friday as well. What time is "0-dark thurty" for you? I could hook up with you around Winchester and ride up with you. I will be stopping in Mass Friday night, so the last 120 miles you would be on your own. My brother will be joining me and ride up early Sat. morning to meet at the hotel for the days ride.

Let me know,

Bob

Toophast,

Sa-weet! Get new rubber on that thing, you're gonna need 'em with the miles you'll be covering! Mt Washington will be taking a good chunk if you're considering going from VT eastward, then back to VT. But, there are also lots of other reasons (roads) that might be worthy of making a day of it IMO. If you're interested, let me know or PM Fred- he has a great list of awesome roads up thatta way. Hurricane Mountain road and 116 from Fryeburg ME heading north are two good ones that come to mind. My wife and my son will be travelling with me on this ride, her on her iddy biddy six-fiddy and she prefers not to ride alone, so maybe if I escorted her home Sunday evening I could either run back up sunday night or possibly meet up with you early monday morning?? Of course, I'd have to burn a sick day Monday, but hey, that's the price ya pay right?

And don't give me no crap about dirt/gravel, you can thank those southern tour guides for that one! I just blow by 'em ;) Err, did I say "blow"? I meant, "drive really fast slightly exceeding the posted speed limit"! Besides, the last half of the Mt Washington auto road is packed dirt/gravel, but easy to traverse (usually). And no MEM, still no guardrails, but you can do it girl!

Heck, if there's any interest in doing a Mt Washington ride on Monday I'd be willing to sponsor it for anyone else making the trek for the weekend. B)

I thinks that's awesome that the hotel room block got filled! Fred or Tom, how many rooms were held? Any idea yet on a rough head count? Sounds like reservations will be needed for sure to oblige this size group for any restaurant. Count me in for the Steakhouse vote.

Midlife- come on over, you won't be disappointed for sure! Glad to meet you!

Hey Gang,

Just checking in on this thread from out on the road. Joann and I are in the middle of week long vacation ride/tour through the Mountains of VT, NY state, and Western MA. We just finished up 2 solid days in the Adirondacks yesterday (magnificent roads up there) and stopped in to Albany to visit with our son. Weather is so poopy today we decided to just hang here with him for the day and resume our ride in the AM. Catskills, and Berkshires yet to come.

It's great that this G/W ride has gained such momentum. Sounds like the dinners will be at 7 Basrrel Brewery on Friday evening, and Jesse's on Saturday. By the way, Jesse's very well may be the best Steakhouse in New England...

I don't know how many rooms were blocked off, as that task was done by Tom, and I haven't heard from him in a while, including PMs left. I hope every thing is OK on that end. I'm pretty sure I have his cell phone number at home. I'll give him a call when I get home. If someone else has his number and wants to check-in with him just drop a message or PM me with the results.

Not to worry, we will have the VT ride no matter what, just looking for some routing info from Tom. If not we'll make one up that covers the basic stuff he's already mentioned.

Totally bummed :(

My neice has scheduled her Jack & Jill for the very same weekend and my daughter is maid of honer. I am still trying to get out of this and do some riding with you folks. Drastically trying to come. I NEED IT. I may do a one day blast possibly. Pending

Edit: Any decision on which ride will be first? G or W?

Dave,

Sounds like whites saturday and Green on Sunday from what I've gathered. Hope you can make it, even if it is a short/day ride!
