It is my understanding that there are 3different OEM touring trunks available from Yamaha. As I would like to use their 39liter trunk I noticed that everybody advertises the 1.8 cubic foot unit which is 50 liters converted. The prices are all over the road from 400 to 800 dollars and I suspect they describe different units. According to my dealer Yamaha offers a 25, 40 and 50 liter case. IMHO the 25 is too small and too expensive for the small volume, the 50 is too big and looks top heavy.

Of course, I know, that they are not yet available in liquid graphite, but that is supposed to change in December 2014.

Anybody have more detailed info? I realize I need to install the factory adapter kit, which I have already done. It looks great and protects that ridiculously shiny black painted surface on the OEM rack.

I've only seen one available from Yamaha but let us know if you find more.

Wemi-

I have a great condition Shad 33L w/mounting plate that I'm not using. You may remember it.....since it was on the 13 I bought from you :)

Let me know if you want me to mail it back to you.

I thought in the USA we just had one size. I think there's a smaller one in Europe. About two years ago or something Iron Pony suddenly had a clearance on them for $199 (free shipping) and many of us snagged one. It was a color that I think was very similar to liquid graphite. IIt's called Granite Gray. It looks great on my black '08. Never again have I seen a deal like this. I know Fairlaner snagged one too. We forum members cleared them out pretty quick.

From my invoice:

Code Name Quantity Price

5JWW07548101 TOURING TRUNK (ALL FJR1300) GRANITE GRAY** 1

$199.99

==========================================================================

Subtotal: $199.99

Shipping: $0.00

Tax: $0.00

Total: $199.99

People rag on them but I personally love the case.

There's been a good deal of chatter on here over the years indicating the OEM trunk might not be the way to go. Other popular choices are Givi and Shad.

D'oh! Sorry Spud.

No worries--for $199 it most definitely was the way to go. For $400+, not so convincing. It's really a quality piece though and looks great on the bike.

My local Yami dealer told me they wanted over $700 for the '14 matching red top case. That was not including the mounting rack! Yeah, OK!! That sounds like a great deal!!

I'm guessing this is a 50L?

Hi big guy. Thanks, but I will try the OEM case if I can find a decent deal on one. I have the 40 liter case on my FJR in Germany and like it. The Shad is great and light, but may be a bit too small.. Besides I already installed the OEM mounting plate. It looks good all by itself and protects that silly high gloss black factory rack. Happy holidays. And when are you heading my way?? Riding season is still on.

Yes, this is the 50 litre one. It is considerably wider. The graphite one pictured here ( above) is the 39 or 40 liter one.

That's the one. You're right it looks an awful lot like the new graphite. If I can snag one this still would be a good deal. A good Givi with mount etc. costa just about that much.

Also there is one 50l model but not available yet in the new colors.I really don't know if the 50l top case could cause a problem to the subframe..Hope that not

I wonder of the 50L case has the same problem as the 39L case.... for those who don't know, the 39L OEM case has an inherent cracking issue around the metal mounting plate glued on the bottom.
Numerous posts on the forum : here is one link : https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/148805-oem-touring-trunk-failure/?hl=%2Bcracks+%2Bcase&do=findComment&comment=1019835
In Europe on the most fjr the top cases are the oem 39L.I have never heard for a cracking issue or for a broken subframe.Neither one.Perhaps the overload or some bad bumpy or and gravel roads caused those problems..I have the oem 39L top case on for about three years without a problem, also my two friends with their 01 and 03 fjr they have the oem 39L top cases on for over of 8 years without a problem too.Notice that they have the old version top cases without the reinforcement metal plate on!

I have one of those on my 2003. There was a recall by yamaha years ago and that issue has long been fixed at no expense to the owners. I have driven my 39 liter case all over Europe and never had any issues. It is much more stable and solid than the Shad I used for a while here in the US.Besides if there are any issues with the case it is a Yamaha OEM Product and therefore guaranteed.

I see you live close to me (La Crescenta, I am in the Valley). I have a gen II top case that I do not use that you can try/or buy for $100. It needs paint on top, as I tried to match it to my 2007 burgundy and failed miserably. Includes the mount and back rest. I don't want the hassle of shipping.

My case came with my 2009 (which I bought used with 8500 kms - very low mileage)... when I saw the posts regarding the cracks, I thought I was not part of the stats until I had a good look at mine. It had 3 different hairline cracks all on the bottom coming up the back. The dealer never wanted to treat the 'damage' as a warranty claim because the bike was a used one. Now, I monitor the progress of the cracks to make sure I don't have a top case total failure.

Contact Yamaha regarding the recall. See my post above. This was a worldwide recall. The dealer in Germany where I bought my 2003 did the recall repair at no charge to me. I don't know what it included, but if the case cracked then that was the reason for the recall. If you cannot get any answers, I will be glad to contact my dealer in Germany and get some relevant information. You might also try to google it. That might even be easier.

Sounds interesting and generous. I have great paint shop here where I had several pieces of my BMW K1600 painted in in factory paint. All of which are flawless. Since the liquid graphite color from Yamaha is not new ( it was on another bike last year and the year before) I don't think that painting it will be a great problem. What is the scratch/gouge situation??
