It seems shipping the motorcycle to a destination and riding back is a way to see more out of your time off.

So what is the average cost to ship a bike? Let's say hypothetically from Jacksonville, Florida to anywhere, California? Maybe late August 2008 time frame?

My experience is that bike shipping is typically in the $350-$1000 one-way range in the Cont US depending on a wide variety of factors: length of the trip, size/weight of the bike (FJRs obviously are going to be on the big/heavy side), whether you crate the bike or not and who does the crating, and whether you pickup/deliver the bike to a dropoff point or need to truck to go to a street address. Many shippers have online quoting services.

A big issue in shipping is damage - most shippers are pretty good, but there are always risks.

Also keep the time required in mind. When I shipped one a couple years ago, the typical transit times were quoted between 10 and 21 days. The company I used had "real time" tracking and although the actual movement across the country was quick, there was mucho sitting at terminals waiting for the truck... :( With fuel prices what they are now, I bet you'll pay $700 with full insurance for X country transportation. And yes BTDT, the risk of damage is real, however minor it might be.

I've used 'Forward Air' a couple of years ago to ship a sidecar rig from Cleveland to Boston. Bike had to be crated but basicly it was a two day trip. It cost me $500 for 2 big crates at the time. Here is the link https://www.forwardair.com/

Thanks MadMike2 for the clarification assist - I guess if I posted more often it wouldn't surprise people when I leap from lurkerdom :)

Thanks for the info and the links :good: - I'm still debating on what I want to do. Part of me wants to burn from here to California and then goof around on the way back. The rest is wanting to just goof off the entire time :) I've been trying for this trip since in 2003. Now I'm so excited I keep replanning the trip.

Taterides - tia for sharing. I'll keep my eye out and will return the favor of anything I find.

Having just this Summer made the trip across the vast USA moutains to mountains, I can say that if you are looking at the value of time off and overall economics, states like Kansas, Wyoming and Missouri are great to see once, but they are expensive to visit. The extra hotel stays, tire consumption and incremental maintenance can quickly add-up.

I would give serious thought to shipping or renting a bike before simply transversing the middle US for the sake of arriving somewhere else. Guess that's why the airlines are still in business?

Yeah....but scenery experienced is better than scenery viewed from the window of an airplane @ 15,000 ft., if you can get an window seat.

$525 to ship my new 2007 from Osseo, MN to my front door in Austin, TX. All they ship is pianos and bikes. Make sure if you use them that they do not take the windshield off. They did to mine, and made some tiny scratches in my tupperware. They sent me a check for $150, and 10 minutes later, with some 3M and my Porter Cable, all new!

I agree with Mike, we just take a different route home. This summer we went across Canada into the mountains of BC then dropped down into the U.S. and returned home. I love backroads, small towns and meeting people, all of which are hard to experience in a plane.
