fjr vs bmw quality

Love to hear opinions of this. I have a buddy who has 3 bmw sport tourers. His point is you get what you pay for, and quality on jap bikes is not going to be like the bmw. I asked him to be specific, is he saying motors don't last as long, parts, etc. He sounded like it was not necessarily the motor miles, as I pointed out many have over 100 k and some with 200k+ miles, but quality of plastic panels, parts etc.

Having a '99 BMW 528iT, I appreciate fine engineering, and love my car (almost 100k). After 110k miles on my '90 Kawasaki Concours, it was time for a new bike. I looked longingly at the BMW K1200/K1300 bikes. However, have you researched their reliability reports?.... not good. ESA shocks that fail in under 50k miles to the tune of $3k to replace. rear shaft drives that don't last so well, etc. Riders stuck in areas with no local bmw dealer to help out. I found lots of K bikes for sale (as I was told I would find) just before warranty expired. Mind you - I liked the K bike I test rode.

As for your friend, BMW (and other German makes, car and motorcycle) are deploying high-sophisticated systems that do NOT have long-term reliability records worthy of praise. These are cars designed for leases / trade-in in 3-5 years. Not sure about the bikes, but I'd certainly avoid a BMW bike model that didn't have a few years of road testing to confirm reliability. You have to ask yourself, what are you looking for? Do you keep you vehicles for a few years, or 10+ years? how many miles do you plan on (I ride approx 12k/year + any major trips)?

One of the primary reasons I went with teh FJR, is the lower than BMW/C-14 Concours maintenance requirements. I'd prefer to be riding than having the bike worked on (and prefer that maint to be cheaper when required).

So, do you have plenty of disposable income and not mind spending it on maint on overpriced maint activities on the BMW? if yes, then enjoy! otherwise, I'd say the quality is quite good on the FJR (and the ST1300, Concorus 14, etc). and will last a full 100k miles.

we're not all out of town and on the road. some of us had to work the weekend but are still nearby.

as for the topic at hand. i have tested a few BMWs and know lots of people who own them. if you have the extra cash to throw around, you could get one i guess. to me, the premium entry fee isn't justified. you can buy a heck of a lot of gas and farkles for the difference in price between an FJR and a comparable BMW.

Anybody want to define what they mean by "Quality"? Fit & finish? Well designed?

The chrome work on a Harley is of higher quality than on my FJR. Oh yeah, right, there's no chrome on the FJR....

The old Kawasaki Concours was rougher looking finish-wise than an FJR, but it was a very durable and long lasting machine.

The automatic centerstand on my buddy's LT has more quality than the one on the FJR...I suppose...
