FJR vs R6 vs 848

Hey folks.

Okay, my Yamaha FJR experience thus far has not been great with all of its issues since buying it new, but it seems to be becoming a healthy bike. I said I wouldn't consider buying another Yamaha, but the R6 has always turned me on. Theres smokin' good pricing on the 07's right now too.

What I >>> WANT <<< is a Ducati 848. I could financially swing it... but barely. I test rode one and absolutely got such an erection over it! Never before have I ridden a bike and lusted after it so badly! But again, the R6 is a sweet looking machine.

How much would these bikes compare performance wise? How much slower/quicker are the two bikes compared to the FJR and how close to they compare to each other?

I guess what I'm looking for is a small crotch rocket to go FAST. It doesn't have to be comfy... just bloody fast.

I'm partial to the duc, wonder why... A 1098 would be even better. The R6 is more affordable. You have to ask yourself;

How much do I want to spend?

How long will I keep this?

How often will I ride it?

Is it worth it?

If you're going to do track days, buy a a track bike. You'll be rather upset if you finance, or pay cash for a 848 Duc and pitch it in a turn. Not a pretty site. A little costly too.

So it's decision time.

the R6 will be outright faster than the Duc either on a straight road or the track, but you have to wring it's neck to do so.. It loves to be revved and redlines at 16,500..on the other hand the 848 would be much easier to ride and can be faster around the track in the right hands. It makes up what it lost to the R6 on the straightaway coming out of the corners and is easy to stay in the power..I had an R6 and got tired of having to rev it all the time..even to ride in normal traffic. It was also the loudest stck bike I've ever had. In order to pass a car you may have to downshift twice to pass quickly and it you will sound like Joe Roadracer when you do. You could have made the same pass on that Duc without downshifting.. I would get the Pearl white 848 if that's what is talking to you..

If you can afford it - go with the 848. That's what I would do. Life is too short to regret not getting the bike you lust after. After reading the comparo against the new Buell in the last MCN, the 848 would be my choice now if I could afford it.

Ah, I hear ya.

I think the R6 will do just fine. I sat on one today and it fit me well. The Ducati is simply awesome, but its also $7000 more and the insurance is more than my FJR!

Just a nice shiny red/black R6 with spools, frame sliders and me with a stupid grin on my face will do just fine.

I appreciate the opinions though!

Yesterday I made a deal with the local dealer to buy their last leftover 2007 red/black Yamaha R6.

Today I got the money from the bank and rode to the dealer on my FJR. The salesman I dealt with wasn't around so I found myself lusting and staring at the R6 for about 10 minutes. While I was standing there... reality crept into my head. My FJR is paid for and I'd have to finance the R6. I don't need the payments and didn't want to be in the hole. Its only a matter of time before the Amero comes along and sinks North Americas economy into the ground and I don't want to be crippled by it.

I went outside of the dealer with cheque still in my pocket and smiled at my shiny 06 blue FJR and gave it a hug. Its going to be appreciated a lot more now.

Now you can justify a set of really sticky sneakers for the FJR's next change ! ,..Juice it and hang off for 2000 miles or so and throw them away.

I would love a Ducati. However, with lack of $ and an innate inability to keep the throttle closed, I'm on a ST instead of a track bike.

I know what it is about the Duc. Exhaust note gets me every time.

I've had 2, a 71 450RT and an 02 750 Monster.

Just read that Helibars now makes a set for the Duc 1098/848. My have to see if my tired old body will fit with the Heli's. That 848 sure is nice & now that the 1098R is out, can a 848R be on the horizon?

I think you might have made the right choice. If you had to deliberate at all, with 8k between the Duc and the R6

go with the R6. The Duc is the kind of thing you just have to have. Price should not be a big factor. If it is, you'll hate the ongoing running costs.

Aside from the obvious virtues of handling, usable power and torque, you just can't beat the Duc for sexy good looks and unique sound.

I bit the bullet today. I found a 2007 Yamaha R6 with 300 KMs on it... not 3000, but 300. The guy had buyers remorse. His girlfriend bitched him out as they needed a new car more than a motorbike. So, I bought it for $8000 Canadian. Yes... thats bloody cheap. I just couldn't pass on that.

Congrats on the R6! Sometimes you just gotta listen to the inner hooligan and give in. I love my FJR, but a clocked about 250 miles on the Daytona this past Saturday and loved every mile of it. I can still hear the growl of that triple opening up.
