... and if the include flippers monument, easy string
This is from Ken Meese blog, you need 4 in a string for leg 2.

Ken was in 13th place at the end of Leg 1! That’s a solid showing out of 107 bikes. You can see the full results here. The amazing Jim Owens is in first place; he won in 2009 (Ken’s first year running, when he came in 9th) and has come in second as well. I think it’s pretty cool that two 2-up teams are in the top 10.

In Leg 1, getting three of the same category in a row (of the five animal categories) meant the third bonus’s points were doubled. In Leg 2, getting four different categories in a row means the fourth bonus’s points are tripled. Even though it’s the same list of bonuses, the combination change means it’s a whole new routing challenge. Fun!

(This next bit is clearly translated through me, someone who doesn’t really understand bike mechanics. Apologies for the squiffy details—and if you’re someone who can explain it better, you are encouraged to do so in the comments!)

Sometime yesterday he found a problem with his front brake controls; he heard a clunk and a bolt is missing, maybe? Now, when he uses the rear brakes, the front brakes engage, so this isn’t an immediate safety concern, but it’s better to have the front controls. He lost more than an hour at the local BMW dealer who didn’t have the exact part but tried to find a workaround, and then he lost more time working on it at the hotel (to no avail). The latest news is that the awesome-beyond-words Dave Stoler stripped the parts off his own bike and overnighted them to Ken’s brother, Dennis, so Ken will have them at the second checkpoint on Saturday evening.

The extra time spent on the bike meant less sleep time, so he’s paying close attention to how he feels on this leg, and set up what be believes is a solid plan that factors in some solid sleep blocks. He said it was a hot day today, but he hydrated with water and sports drinks.

I look forward to talking to him tomorrow and hearing about his adventures. The next checkpoint is Saturday evening in Dallas (if I previously said Sunday evening, I apologize!).

24+ hours later and 1/3 of the field is still in TX. Lots of ground to cover and lots of bonni it seems

JohnF posted: FYI...I have ridden in over 45 LD rallies (2-IBR's), so I have a little concept of what goes on.
Didn't mean to disparage your experience -- certainly not with 2 more IBRs than I have ridden -- but there are a lot of folks here who have ridden zero rallies and are trying to understand how one goes about doing it.

Gotta go; looks like someone's headed for the Atlanta Fish Market (33.837037, -84.378992). They'll probably need some cheer since it's been raining for almost 24 hours. (Where's my coconut shell bra?)

Erik Lipps is in need of some Nylon screws for his 2012 Gen2 FJR Windscreen. Is there anyone that is in the Dallas vicinity that could get some delivered to checkpoint 2? They should be readily available at a Yamaha dealer. He needs 3. Originally he thought he needed the well nuts also because he thinks they were going to fall out. While we were talking we decided that if he puts some duct tape on them he can hold them in place so he should not need them.

EDIT:

Yamaha PN for the screw is 90150-05024-00

In a pinch a metal screw would work but I'm not sure of the specs.

FYI - Eric Lipps needs screws and well-nuts for an FJR windscreen delivered to CP2 in Allen, TX. Gen2 FJR, if anyone has them and can get them to the checkpoint.

Thanks guys. I was laughing at his duct tape windshield but it seems to be working for now.
Duct tape belongs on BMWs and Kawasaki's.... not FJRs!

Let's get both well nuts and proper fasteners ready to go for Eric at Checkpoint II.

Need one of you Texas FJRForum members/observers to step up, please.

I am in south Florida- is he out of the area already?

Metal fasteners will work too. Lowes/Home depot all carry them. I am right off I-95 if he is headed down to the keys I could meet up on his way through

I posted on FB as well. It looks like he will have the screws he needs - as an option - I am north of Austin,TX and have 7 screws in the OEM packaging ready to go. I will need help getting them from Austin to Allen. I am certainly willing to drive and meet someone if we have a runner.

Joe

Checking spotwalla I see one poor soul near Phoenix, were the temps will reach 100+ today.

But it's dry heat.

tell that to St. George, I seem to remember quite the duct tape array holding his bike together - was it 09? He hit something, I want to say deer, but could have been something else :)
