DID the search and came up with many discussions around 2006 or so on flashing ABS light. Brake lights out, sticking brake switch, wheel spin, etc. Today on a relatively sedate ride, the yellow ABS light began to flash. The only thing that was unusual was that I was driving at about 25 mph through a paving construction zone. The light began to flash, then after a few brake applications, it went out. The rest of the day it flashed intermittently, and would reset after a couple of brake applications. Never had to recycle the key. I didn't have time to look since I had to get to work, but I suspect a little piece of blacktop may have lodged itself in an unfortunate spot. Anybody got any ideas where I might look in the morning after work? This happened to anyone else?

Now don't think I'm spouting doom and gloom here, 'cause I'm not, but my '04 had the intermittent flashing ABS light, fairly regularly for about 2 weeks to a month before I discovered my ABS was MIA.

Not trying to make ANY connection, but the two events came together awfully close in a timeline.

2014 is still under the original warranty unless you bought it before November 2013.

From your Owner's Manual:

ABS warning light

In normal operation, the ABS warning light comes on when the key is turned to “ON”, and goes off after traveling at a speed of 10 km/h (6 mi/h) or higher.

If the ABS warning light:

  • does not come on when the key is
  • comes on or flashes while riding
  • does not go off after traveling at a speed of 10 km/h (6 mi/h) or higher
The ABS may not work correctly. If any of the above occurs, have a Yamaha dealer check the system as soon as possible.

Cause could be anything from the tests you have done (I'd check you aren't riding with your foot resting on the brake lever, a non-obvious form of brake sticking

). I'd have thought a wiring/connector issue would cause a "hard" error, light on and an error message.

Get it in the shop. Probably nothing, but you'd be better off with a record of your reporting the problem under warranty.

And make sure the rear break pedal is not sticking.
Funny story here....Yesterday I noticed that the rear tire was down to the wear bars. That's my limit, so I took my new BT-023 and my rear wheel down to the local non-denomination bike shop to have the new rubber spooned on. Came back home and was doing odd jobs around the house while waiting for the shop to call. Ran out of stuff to do, and thought of the ABS flashing light and the suggestions made of possible solutions. I thought "I wonder if the rear brake pedal is sticking on this like it did on the 2008? So i go over to the bike on the center stand, and push down on the rear brake pedal...3 times. Holy sheite, there is a LOT of travel, but it does not stick. Wait....what...WTF did I just do!!!!??? Long story short, did not push the piston out of the caliper, close though. LOTO should apply here!
