I have to vent.

I just rolled in from 5 days of touring MA and ME with sister-in-law and her boyfriend (a Hardley guy) that are visiting from CA. We are scheduled to leave early Sat. morning to tour NH and parts of VT. This morning I discover my rear tire is ffssssstttttt -- flat with a nail in the center of my ½ done Diablo.

Not having time to deal with it myself I called a local dealer but found that they don’t now, nor ever have repaired a street motorcycle tire :glare: They will sell me a new tire for $285 ($144 @ Southwest Moto). I called a bunch of other dealers and not a single dealer repairs tires or has ever has repaired tires but they all will sell me a new one for $245 to $330.

Ok, I do have a set of tires due at my back door from SWM this Friday; perhaps one of the dealers would put them on for me. I know that if they are one of the 25% of dealers that would even install the tires it will cost between $65 ea to $120 ea because I didn’t purchase the tires from the dealer. Now every dealer says that because I didn’t buy the tires from them they can’t fit me in to their shop for at least 2-3 weeks. That would make it too late for EOM, the reason I have new tires coming in the first place.

My brother and I are saving our pennies to buy a tire changer to get out from under this tyranny but it will probably be next spring before it happens. I’m off to see if I can find my tire plug kit, I took it out of my bike a couple of weeks ago when doing some maintenance.

Well, maybe I feel a bit better, thanks for listening. I know this is an old repeat topic but the wound is fresh and the pain current. Off to NEPRT and maybe slap a lock on it for being such a rehash of the same ol’ s#it.

Good for you! That one point is a non-NEPRT nugget amongst the many that are.

A few words to remember:

Wal-mart....sticky string....$10 compressor while you're there......all cheap.....PM if needed. ;)

Any of the other NH boys have a tire changer you might use or might have someone they know that could fit you in? FREDW, SNIKR, NICERUMBLE, etc...

I've got extra toggle switches if you need them for your ride down.

Just repaired my new Avon, that had picked up a finish nail, with sticky string.

Checked tire pressure this morning. 16psi!

Looks like I'll be getting another new Avon before EOM.

Damn it! :angry2:

I picked up a nail on my CC trip last year, plugged it, and rode it 2000 miles home . It started to lose air after I got home (about 3k miles) and I replaced it at this time.

Just sent you a pm Alan.

Alan,

Two thoughts:

One - Plug it. If it's only half done you have another 3k miles or so left on it. Nail holes are easy peasy to plug, assuming it's in the center of the tread and not a side wall. Get the sticky strings and "just do it". Takes all of 10 minutes if you have to read the instructions.

Two - If you get a tire you want put on before EOM, pull the wheel off and bring it on over here to Londonderry. Fast Freddie's shop is always open for friends. You shouldn't have to pay such high prices and take such nonsense from those ******** dealers. I don't have a tire machine, but I have a home-made tire stand, bead breaker, and a couple of good tire spoons and a balancing rig.

Oh, and I've never scratched a wheel yet either. Can you say that about the dealer charging $120 to pop a friggen tire on?

If you don't feel comfortable using a sticky string, perhaps a plug/patch is for you. You know the kind... the fix that is a plug & patch combined? I know that the repair needs to be done from the inside. Can't you take the wheel off of the bike, break the bead & dismount a small section of tire? Just enough to do the patch job?

It seems to me that would work w/o too much effort.

"C" clamps make great bead breakers.

Finally back home for a few hours. Thanks for all the offers for help!

The good news -- my new tires should be arriving at my door any second now. I should be ready to ride out into the hurricane wind and rain tomorrow, hope Phil on his rented Hardley is up to it :p We will be going back to Maine this weekend, then ride through the White & Green Mountains on Monday and Tuesday.

The bad news -- the 'nail' in my tire turns out to have been glass. The hole I could see in the center of the tire was just the tip of the iceberg, the inside of the tire has a cut over ½" long and it murdered the cords. I have a lot of glass shards inside the tire too. This tire had no chance of a repair for casual riding and would have been iffy for a field repair to get back to civilization.

Well, I'll have new sneakers for EOM and they will be well scuffed in by then :)
