Front Wheel Spacer

I just replaced my tires; took the wheels off and re-installed after getting the tires mounted. Followed instructions in the FJRTech article and it seemed to go very well. When putting it back together, it seemed to me that the front wheel spacer (right side) should have gone further into the wheel. I can't remember for sure how it was originally and couldn't find any pictures on the net (first time I have had the wheel off the bike). Anyway, I thought I might post a photo here and let someone tell me that a) I DID IT RIGHT or B) I'M AN ***** BECAUSE I FORGOT TO DO SOMETHING or c) THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH MY FRONT WHEEL.

Yup. That's the direction the spacer goes in, with the flange to the outboard.

The narrower diameter fits inside a seal and should be lightly greased. Looks like you figured that part out.

So, why didn't you take the picture BEFORE you removed the wheel Ross?

Did you search on it?

You know that in the FAQs that you agreed to read when you signed on here there is a link to removing and replacing your wheel. Did you look at that?

Front wheel spacers on other bikes I have owned typically went further into the wheel hub. This didn't look "right" to me but I couldn't see any other way it could go. I knew the orientation was right. Although in jest, your comment about photographic documentation BEFORE doing any work is not such a bad idea. Memory isn't what it used to be! Maybe I have some OCD, but I ended out going over everything about three times - making sure I "remembered" to tighten the myriad of fasteners that have to be removed or loosened to remove and replace the wheels.

At least the forum now has a picture of a "correctly" installed front fork spacer...

I think its just the picture - shot with my 'phone with the bike on the sidestand in the parking lot. I will clean off the extra blob of grease and have another look before I ride.

Cleaned the wheel - that gets done a couple of times per year, every 10-15 thousand miles or so (every tire change). The blob of grease on the spacer was missed during re-assembly. The bug goo on the forks is an annual thing; unless I manage a good long ride in the rain to soak them off.

No self-respecting FJR owner would have blobs of grease or bugs on his bike. I clean my bike after each ride regardless if I'm home or on the road. Other bikers and non-bikers come by and comment how great the bkie looks. I have even make some converts. Don't give Feejer owners a bad rep....clean that bike!!!!

Art, are you sure you own a FJR and not a Harley?

My Feejer gets washed twice a year whether it needs it or not. And I'm averaging about 14,000 miles each year so it gets a little dirty. My only saving grace is that we get lots of rain, which tends to wash the big chunks off.

What is happening is there is a bit too much grease, and when you ride or weather is hot, it oozes out a little bit and then flings off... I'm guilty of putting too much on too, but try to wipe up all the excess before going anywhere. A light coating is all that's needed.
