Hi all.

I'm back from a weekend trip of just under 600 miles,2-up ,with saddlebags and top-box,mostly motorway,speed between

70-80 mph,some urban driving. My calculations show just over 34 mpg. Is this normal? I think this a high figure,

considering the bike has just been serviced,including a new air-filter. Could worn spark-plugs account for this?

Seems on the lowside. A similiar trip me and the wife took last month we got about 43 mpg according to the onboard computer. On the slab I rode 65-75mph though, but I doubt this made very much difference.

Probably not....unless they're they're extremely aged.

2 up. You both add up to 250 pounds of 500 pounds? If the latter, mileage is in the normal range with 70-80 in your road diet.

Air pressure counts and myriad other variables. I've seen anywhere from 23.5 to 54 mpg myself.

I road 4750 miles in 11 days in May and I now have 36k on my 2009. I try to avoid freeway miles and I usually I get 42-44 mpg and so it was on my 11 day trip, until last day of my trip, when the urge to go home hit. I was in Montana where the freeway speed limit is 75mph - I did 80.

The FJR drank fuel. I got well under 40mph. It was then I came to understand why some want a 6th gear on this thing and why some LD riders have an aux tank. At 35 mph that is 2 gallons per hour so you are stopping for gas every 2.5 hours. Stopping like that will get you no LD awards.

 
I forgot to say that I have Power Commander fitted,which does increase consumption,but not that much. Tyres were

at the correct pressures,there was no wind to speak of, and on previous trips my mileage was better with a bigger load.

This increase in consumptio9n has happened in the last few months with no change in riding style,and when riding solo

the consumption is only a little improved.

 
My mileage with the PCV sucked. Never could ge it over 38 on the highway, ever. With it removed, I am up at 45 at 70MPH on the highway, 40 in rural riding. Your computer is not accurate with the PC installed.

I didn't use the onboard computer to calculate the mileage,I did it the old-fashioned way.I filled up to the brim at

the beginning of the trip,kept a record of the fill-ups during the trip,and fulled-up again to the brim at the end of the

trip. This way ,I know the calculation is accurate.

 
On my 07 with Power Commander on my recent SaddleSore my average was 37.7 pulling a small single axle trailer. Distance traveled was 1150 miles in 18 hours.

It's the only time I have really checked the mileage in the 64,000 miles I've had it.

 
Might as well beat this horse some more. Running two up and we aren't small, pulling the Bushtec trailer with an 03 with a PC and staying within +10 of the speed limit I average in the low 40's. :p

 
I see "Italy" in the location...which version of the gallon are you using? US or UK?

 
Seems low to me also; pull a plug and look for soot (i.e. rich running). As Iggy mentioned, so many variables to look at/consider, but personally, I've never gotten that low of mileage ever.

Sorry, buy I have done tons of freeway miles on my bike, and especially when I'm on a trip, I run between 85 and 90 pretty consistently. Most trips, run around the 42-43mpg range. These things don't start burning lots of fuel until around 100mph.

Bad plugs WILL help your mileage go to ****...Along with 50 or 60 other things. You should probably just ride the dammed thing.

Interesting. I changeed my plugs right after my trip in May and I think they were not so good. After the trip I checked the valves (no adjustment), changed the plugs and air filter and synced the throttle bodies. As a result of the work the idle was more stable, less hunting than before.

Since then I have not run across the state on the freeway so I don't know if my 75+mph mileage improved. Riding from Seattle to Spokane on I-90 is rather boring.

Pardon my ignorance, but in my experience and regardless of the bike, the factor weight, speed and environment is huge.

Meaning 2up add lots of weigh lets say 150lbs adds to the fuel milage decrease,

Going 70 - 80 is not the top end of a FJR but more than normal, adds again

Pounding out a super slab mostly having bad wind in your face adds again,

Meaning I wouldn't bother because I know that my fuel milage will suck at this point.......

I do usually back roads small highways and pull about 42 mpg, going slap and than as usual in the hurry will give me 39 - 40... Compared to my Hummer H2's 11 - 14 mpg, I'm so far in the good I wouldn't even bother to calculate :lol:

I'm looking for a pillion partner at 150 lbs. [Must look good in heeled boots and leather jacket; and MUST BE FEMALE. I will be checking.]

But I think your mileage may be low.
