My bike has an intermitten problem, of the worst kind :( While riding as speed it occasionally sputters , the engine completely dies, and fires again a second later... just like hitting the kill switch momentarily. Sometimes it's so severe that the bike will come to a stop (from 70 MPH) with out the engine ever firing. Sometimes when you start the bike up in neutral and put it in gear it imedately dies with the clutch fully disengaged. This all sounds like perhaps a side stand switch but I have removed that from the circuit and it changed nothing and checks fine.

It always start if the bike is in neutral... In gear and pulling the clutch will not work, even with the side stand up.

Sometimes the bike runs great (very flustrating when trying to find the problem).

My wonderfull dealer sold me the 03 manual when I got the bike and told me that nothing changed... However the FJR1300R manual shows a Fuel Injection relay in the center behind the instrument pannel with Red, Red/Green, Red/black, and Green/White wires. The relays behind the instrument panel on my bike do not have these color wires and disconnecting the relays did not prevent the bike from running (which the Fuel Injection Relay would do).

The other suspect is the Starting Relay and/or one of the diodes used in the interlock circuit since it seems to affect the starting motor in a strange way sometimes.

I would greatly apprecate somebody with an 04 FJR1300S manual (or suplement) looking up the location and wire colors for the Fuel Injection Relay. That would help me diagnose my problem.

Looking at my fjr1300s © schematic....

looks like a blue connector with the following...

G/Y W/L R/W

R/B B Br

G/Y = GREEN / YELLOW

W/L = WHITE / BLUE

R/W = RED / WHITE

R/B = REB /BLACK

B = BLACK

Br =BROWN

HOPE THAT HELPS !

Have you checked the switch up by the clutch? Your bike should start with no problem when in gear with the sidestand up and the clutch pulled in. Maybe that's a clue that will help you find the problem?

Good luck!!

Don't think the clutch switch would affect the engine once it's running.

The sidestand switch will stop a running engine. The circuit from the sidestand switch to the ECU loops through the ignition switch. If the contact in the ignition switch opens while the engine is running the engine will stop just as it would if you lowered the sidestand.

The ignition switch has two electrical contacts. The large contact carries all the system power. The smaller contact is for this loop-thru engine control circuit. This smaller contact could be misbehaving allowing momentary or longer open circuits.

+1 There are a few threads regarding the ignition switch causing the JFR to cut out temporarily. Not an easy thing to fix because the switch is difficult to replace but there may be a way to jump it out for diagnostic purposes.
