Here in East Tennessee, gasoline prices went up $0.40 to $0.70 per gallon practically overnite. Guess the gas in the underground tanks somehow changed as I'm sure distributors & station owners would not take advantage of the butt f*cking Katrina gave the Gulf Coast ;) . And, Wed pm, there were some lines at gas stations. I filled up our car about 8:30pm at a local station. There were 3 people directing traffic and 2-3 cars at each of 8 pumps w/ a $30 "hurricane shortage" limit.

I was wondering how widespread this scenario is around the US. Can others chime in here?

I got my car washed today at one of those gas and wash type stations. I pulled to the pump and paid $3.15/9 for premium (friggin' VeeDub better start tuning their gas motors for the regular blends, PDQ). In the 30 or so minutes that passed while I waited for my car to be made shiny, they changed the prices by 9 cents/gal.

What cricks my neck is that the storage tanks where prolly filled 3 or 4 days ago. What, are the gas stations floor planning their stock? They should charge with the appropriate markup for the cost of the gas at the time the tanker trucks filled their storage tanks! I'd better lay in a good supply of Vaseline. This cattle prod up my ass is starting to hurt...

Oh, Mayberry, CA (aka Santa Barbara, CA)

The world should stop using fuel for two weeks and that would sort those money hungry mother fuckers out in a big way! :erm:

I remember recently reading/hearing that if North Americans stopped buying gas and diesel for just one day, the reserves would be overflowing.

Hey, what are youz guyz down under paying? (For gas, that is!)

Superamerica/Speedway, a large local refiner/gas chain, has locked prices at $2.99 per gal, and will keep them that way, according to what I am hearing. They are losing money, but the corporate stores are locked there. The franchises are floating higher. In any case, it's an interesting concept, and they should be congratulated.

And despite all this, it's still cheaper than bottled water. WTF?
That's because refining water to get the bear and salmon taste out is very costly. :D

Got this in the e-mail today...thought you guys/gals would get a chuckle from it...

Well I'm in a rural area and we are paying about $1.26 for Unleaded per litre so if you guys go by the gallon (#3.5 lts per gal?) thats $4.41 AUD. considering 6 months ago we were paying 90 odd cents for a litre yes folks we are all getting fucked over around the world!!! In some distant country areas in Oz they are paying $1.60 or so per litre.

The government takes 38 cents straight up plus the GST component (10%) of the overall price they are making a killing!

Holy shit! What, that's like 6 - 7 bucks US?! Zooks!
Wait, wait: Really soon that will be what you ARE paying. For the last few months as oil bounced around $50/barrel, then $60 and moving up, analysts have been saying that the Big Oil companies WANT gas to go over $3/gal so we get used to it. After that, the sky's the limit! And that was before Katrina even formed, much less aimed at New Orleans. Now, conveniently, it is there, and it's going to stay there, never to go lower again. Next, they'll aim for $4/gal.

Na mate our dollar buys around 76 cents US so it's better where you are but today I was out and about and the fuel has gone up 10 cents. You guys don't have government tax taken out of the fuel pirce in the US do you? In other words it's not taxed?

Wanna bet? They used to have to LIST the amount of taxes per/gallon going back to the early 70's. When fuel was around $0.40/gal, taxes were about 25% of that, and Federal taxes took the Lion's Share. Now they don't have to list the taxes anymore....

This is a one-way trip boys and girls.

Prices from now on (I mean for the rest of our natural lives) will only continue to go up FROM WHERE WE ARE...

And frankly, anybody in the last five years who couldn't see SOMETHING like this coming - and as a result, went out and bought an SUV - - - now deserves to lie in the bed they made.

Get used to it, kiddies - - - efficiency will be REQUIRED to survive from this point forward.

$3.39 staten island n.y. and the u.s has the cheapest gas any where in the world

IIRC, Mr. Bush said anyone who raised prices in the face of the Katrina catastrophe was going to be prosecuted. Did that exclude his oil buddy pals?
